Spireites for the drop - Gerrard

Reporter: Matthew Chambers
Date online: 07 February 2017

ANTHONY Gerrard has responded sharply to comments from Chesterfield manager Gary Caldwell concerning Athletic's conduct, stating his belief that the Spireites are destined for the drop.

Gerrard, who turned 31 yesterday, was sent off after reacting angrily to a confrontation with Ian Evatt as the players made their way towards the changing rooms at half-time on Saturday. It means he serves a one-match ban for tonight's clash at MK Dons.

"People should be more professional than they were," said Caldwell after his side lost 1-0. "I don't like to see the way they acted as individuals at half-time and full-time."

While apologetic over his own conduct, Gerrard had his say on Chesterfield's ineffective style while also making the claim that bottles were thrown towards Athletic's players in the tunnel at the Proact Stadium.

"Maybe his own team could have done with not having that bit of professionalism and then, maybe they could have got the three points.

"It's not always about being pretty and passing it around the back four when 1-0 down with four minutes to go.

"They haven't got it and for me, personally, I think they will go down.

"When you don't test a goalkeeper for 45 minutes of a side that is a man down, it tells you all you need to know about the pretty passing football.

"They were devoid of ideas. Maybe that is down to the coaching, who knows?

"On a lack of professionalism, maybe I did lose my head a little bit. Sometimes things happen on a football field that aren't professional, like sticking your head on someone. If you are going to do that, please carry on. Because it means only one thing to me - I want to fight.

"Instead of running into your changing room and chucking bottles out of your changing room, if you are man enough to start sticking your head into people's faces, be man enough to stand there toe to toe."

Gerrard returns in time for Athletic's home clash with Coventry on Saturday and holds his hands up over the dismissal, which resulted in Ryan Flynn being sacrificed for Paul Green at half-time.

"I have apologised to the people I need to apologise to - the chairman, the fans and the players," he added.

"My silly mistake didn't end up costing us. In fact it brought us closer together and made us more tight-knit."

Sheridan was also left unimpressed with Caldwell's post-match comments on Athletic.

"That's something I would never, ever say," Sheridan said. "They just couldn't break down 10 men. There's the problem."

Me too. Said it at elsewhere- near the end of the first half, they half cleared a corner- and with Evatt staying up and asking for a cross into the far post- we continued to recycle and recycle the ball until Nolan misplaced a pass- they broke, outnumbering us, and only a good save from Fulton kept the scores level. Fast forward to the 91st minute- exact mirror image of our corner for them- they lump it to the back post for their centre back to do his job up there and take home the points.

Lets just hope such comments galvanise our team for Saturday and the rest of the season.

His points regarding our lack of ideas and the likelyhood of us going down are spot on.

So was Caldwell's comments about the way Oldham played

GC was asked last night about not leaving a man up when they had a corner even when down to 10 men!
He didnt really give a reply as to why, just sort of blamed Evans for not picking up the man on "phase 2 corner"

His comments about Chesterfields play may be spot on, I wasnt there.

Everything else about the comments attributed to him reads unprofessional yob. Shame he only got a one match ban as that sounds like a straight red for violent conduct - which ought to be at least a three match ban.

He may have made a valid point about our playing style but he was still very lucky that his actions didn't cost Oldham the game. He came up to the stand and was so unpleasant that one of their Directors pathetically tried to calm him down and unsuccessfully tried to persuade him to leave his seat. The Chronicle should have focussed on his behaviour on and off the pitch. It might also ask why some of their Directors acted like over indulgent parents despite the fact that they were critical of him before he sat down.

They could have sent the other centre half off as well and we wouldn't have scored.

What's the "pretty passing football" he's talking about? That's not what we played.

Sadly for them, they can't play us every week

It does work but at what cost to what is supposed to be entertainment - they've scored 17 goals all season and their tactics were borderline cheating against us. Needs must I suppose but the game would be dead if what went on in that match was the norm.

Well said

The days of taking a free kick in the wrong place and then not moving it as per instructed by the ref as a time wasting technique have long gone. (I have a vague recollection of Dave Blakey asking for a spanner? to tighten a stud once when town were struggling)

Dubious managers generally of teams of weaker standing are introducing more (sophisticated?) methods to earn! their team a point. We've had the ball boys farce introduced by Swansea (Hazard sent off) which culminated in Pboro giving us a master class Now we have people playing dead, 5 minutes into the game for disruption purposes and managers selecting their subs accordingly to gain maximum effect.
When these tactics are employed and affective it causes a cancer because the aggrieved team will adopt the same tactic at some stage.
As you rightly say the game will die, but what's to be done?
Derbyshire is Derbyshire
Yorkshire is Yorkshire

Never the twain shall meet.
