Enjoy the season folks.
Goodbye
Promise?
On a serious note, I made my feelings clear on Ched Evans when he was found guilty. And without going overboard, the crime he was found guilty of is something that has affected people very close to me. So as you can imagine, I've pretty strong feelings on the matter. And I've also stated that even if he hadn't been found guilty, his actions were deplorable at best. But he has won his appeal and if his retrial is successful, he would have rightly been able to sign for a number of teams.
Lee Hughes, the Plymouth goalie...these players didn't win any appeals, are still guilty of their crimes and they returned to football. Im not saying I feel great about this signing. I don't. But if he is found not guilty, if his name is cleared, the moral outrage argument is somewhat void.
Weird one. But will I be burning my shirts? No. And I don't believe anyone on here when they say they will (or the equivalent in protest, for the pedants).
Anyway, consider my mind blown.

At the moment he is not guilty of rape, he is awaiting trial for it. A totally different matter if found guilty, but it is quite rare for a conviction to be overturned and a retrial ordered.
My most pressing concern isn't his legal battle, it's the fact he hasn't played proper football for 4 years.
Yes he is a wally for gtting into that situation, but we've had Tendayi convicted of assault along with Craig Davies and goodness how many other players.
Innocent until proven guilty, and having had 1 conviction overturned, guilty isn't likely to happen.
I tend to agree there. I suspect the football club took advice on this. Good post.

Pretty much my stance. I'm not too comfortable with it but if he's found innocent after all this then I guess I can't really be too annoyed.

I think if he is found not guilty and people continue mouthing off - if he isn't guilty, they might well be advised to keep their feelings to themselves....

That was four years ago and is that really worth the gamble with our reputation and risk to *sponsors etc at stake? *Surely the club has made all sponsors fully aware of this... They can't be that stupid can they

You've hit the nail on the head though... IF we weren't so hard up, we wouldn't have gone down this route.

Evans had his conviction quashed and having read a lot about the case I am genuinely surprised it even got to court.
Yes he had drunken sex with a stranger and cheated on his girlfriend. How many people can hand on heart say they have never done this in their youth, maybe some posters on here are currently engaged in extra marital affairs? The Brad, The Aka it was happening all the time, it still happens all the time.
How many times do we read about footballers and roasting or texting pictures of their genitals etc.
The Internet and social media in particular mean this is so easy to get out in the public domain, does anyone for a minute think this is a new thing?
Take for example Tom Jones, a man who had thousands of women during his long career. All this time he was married to the same woman and was he ever referred to as a "scumbag"? He was a judge on a prime time family tv show yet no one ever commented on how bad a role model he was.
Have I got a daughter? Yes I have. I was also a 20 something male who met plenty of 20 something females in my younger days and know that they are no different to blokes in what they get up to after a few bevvies.
I believe there's an awful lot of hypocrisy from some of those slinging the mud.
As far as whether we should have signed him goes I'm not sure. I won't enjoy the negativity and adverse publicity that this brings to our club but on the other hand I do believe that on the facts known so far he should be given a second chance to rebuild his career and life. If one things for certain he knows this is his big chance and unless he gives it his absolute all he knows he'll get nowhere.
My thoughts also. The vultures are circling. Innocent until proven guilty but I also agree that his signing will create mass hysteria I mean media stories. Has he got to continue to be outcast if he found not guilty. If he is found guilty then it will hit he fan but until then I will give him
a chance.

I would prefer him not to pull on the shirt for first team games until we know the outcome of the retrial and then judge.

As I said I don't have an issue but I think the club have failed to take into account the numerous views fans will have on this.

Risk to sponsors maybe. I see no risk based on him not playing football for 4 years. Hes only 27, looks a pretty fit boy, will have a full pre season, and wont have forgotten how to put the ball in the net.

There were plenty of fans saying they were finished with the club while the current owners are involved even before this one hit the headlines.

I agree, and also with your previous comments. A lot of people here seem to think that football goes on in some sort of bubble, where any behaviour is acceptable as long as it brings 3 points and an excuse to punch the air and shout. And worryingly that mindset seems to extend to the people that run the club. This is a desperate and shabby signing. Furthermore, regardless of what may or may not be said during the retrial, you can expect Evans' defence team to hold up this contract as some sort of character reference. The club is being used. Those of us who live outside the bubble have one form of sanction, I suggest we use it.

Great post, from a lawman no-less.
I also have a step daughter, and my moral compass shouldn't come into question in this IMO
Trev sums it up brilliantly for me.

Don't understand the posts about withdrawing support for the club though, as it stands the guy is innocent, if he is proven guilty we get rid and if he is innocent he continues to play
It genuinely is that simple as far as I'm concerned.

It would be like having him on a 3 month loan deal if his trial goes the wrong way for him.Given the history of the case, its likely to tarnish the Club's good name but would the goals he scores before October be worth the hassle. Personally I think he is a prat (to put it mildly) for getting himself in the situation, but if he is finally cleared, then I'll back him like any other player at the Club, as long as he keeps his nose clean.Under normal circumstances I'd be very excited about this signing.Fingers cross this doesn't backfire on our great Club.
