Are yes the Villa game. It was their final home game and championship celebration game. 44 years later it gives me a chance for the last whinge of the season re game changing decisions. Villa were struggling to get their game going when King Ern scored an Ern classic at the Holt End only for a clown with a flag to wrongly disallow it. I was sat directly behind the clown and within range of him so as to propel a plastic beer container (less than half full) in his general direction (after the frustration had died down I was pleased I had missed the rotund, incompetent, single parented target).Villa went straight up other end and scored.
On a serious note and for the ones gathering historical milestones for Erns day would this particular game be the highest crowd he played in front of? 45,500+
I was sat behind you Mick. Memory might be playing tricks but I recall Ernie had two of three stabs with the side of his foot before bundling it home. Surely not a classic. A match memorable because it was, and still is I think, the biggest league gate I've ever seen us play in front of. Glad to be corrected.
Even more so. One of the greatest performances (second half) I've ever seen by a Chesterfield goalkeeper, if not any goalkeeper courtesy of one Phil Tingat(sic) or was this another game? There must be others who recall the occasion.
