What about Glan Letheran, Steve Ogrosovic and of course world number one Gordon Banks.

I'll never forget Andy Beasley in the promotion season. 1-0 away win at Scunthorpe he made a couple of top class saves even though he had little else to do. He had a "wobbly" spell before Mercer arrived but he was solid as a rock for ages before then.

Chris, I agree with your comment regarding the average size of the team we had out yesterday.

The lack of height in defence, in particular, could be worrying - whilst Anderson is tall he needs a few more steaks. We have both O'Neil and Jones to come back, it seems, soon and each of these is taller than those that played yesterday but neither is particularly dominant in the air. And, the season might be over before Evatt is match fit.

In midfield, we do have Liddle available again in a couple of matches time. Ariyibi and Banks aren't small but aren't combative in the air, similarly Gardner and Donohue. Dimaio, again, is taller than Ryan and, possibly, Morsy but lacks the upper body strength of the latter.

Then, up front, we have SEB who is dwarfed by every CB he plays against and Novak who, again, ain't small but his strength is not in the air.

I think, yesterday, Crewe had a few Giants whilst we had none is more to the point and, as a result, we looked weak in dead-ball situations.

They were all giants except Deano's lad. Possession football policy seems to be on the back burner now. Just fill the team with tallest players they can sign, but they have been bottom all season

Negatives!!!

There were times in the game when I thought our defending as a unit was atrocious. 'What the bluddddy 'ell is going on'?, I kept thinking. Maybe I was just in a nervous state, but I thought we were fine until Herd went off. Whatever his failings, he's good tactically and they were not getting in the gap between our back 4 and our midfield. When he went off, this became, and continued to be a problem.

Still, all's well that ends well.

I really like Anderson. He's learning fast, he's sensible, and he's not ponderous.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

Good points, Dave.

The win was more than welcome, but we conceded too many opportunities for my liking.

On another day...

And yeah, for all his faults Herd was the nearest we had to a defensive midfielder.

After he went off it was always gonna be a case of which of two open sides would score more.

Correct. The two sets of midfielders were very creative. I personally thought their CM number 20, Jones, was outstanding. We had better forrads.

And got an assist

Goal and assist were mis-kicks Herd would've been proud of!

Saying that, I don't give a monkeys at present how they go in, but we'd do well to rethink when the season is over. And from what he's said, I'm pretty sure DW is of the same opinion.

Having viewed the goals in afraid I'm gonna have to take his assist off him

We are definitely being found wanting in defending the high ball in and around Tommy. Evatt has been a big miss in this respect

We could've won by more if we hadn't put the useless one on!

No we were too busy defending.

I was surprised they took off their goal scorer, no. 41.
Per their local press report, not one of their seven subs, all youths, had started a game for the first team.

Because Mani wouldn't/couldn't get hold of the ball at the other end of the pitch!

Never saw The great Gordon Banks play for us, but the best BY FAR that I have seen in our goals is John Osborne.

He's right up there, but Ozzie just gets the nod from me. Never saw Ron Powell play.

Agree entirely, I'm not sure on Herd, but for a while we visibly wilted when he went off..like you say the gap between our back four and midfield was massive for a while. Gladly alls well....and that!

Talking of their players, bakayogo (their goal scorer) was pretty dangerous first half, had drew in trouble on a couple of occasions. Didn't do much second half though.
