Can anybody explain the ref's decision making process in this instance - first of all he appeared to award the decision in our favour then, after one of their players objected, changed his mind and gave the foul to them whilst, meanwhile, Novak remained prostrate on the ground and it emerged he needed treatment to an injury to his face and took no further part in the game.
Just wondered - did Novak foul their man with his face???

I think Novak tackled their man from behind without making much contact with the ball. I assume he landed face down on the ground but whatever the initial foul was committed by Novak
The referee got the decision correct, eventually

Not according to Samy Morsy after the game. He said their player elbowed Novak in the face and couldn't believe the referee didn't show a straight red, as for his opinion of the freekick decision being reversed..........

Well that might explain the facial injuries because I couldn't see how he could have sustained them otherwise.
If it was an elbow then the ref was very close to the action so why did he not see it?
Then, again, why did he initially give the foul to us then change his mind?
Much as I admire Rochdale for what they have achieved with such poor support I do think they committed a few rather cynical fouls towards the end and with a different ref might have been awarded with a red card or two.

His face was helluva a mess and I thought he was smacked and a poor ref yesterday and Rochdale spoilt their good play by some nasty fouls and fooling thecref big-time.

Agree with that, they resorted to nasty tackles when we were getting on top. I have to say though, that it was probably balanced by us getting away with Drew's handball; I know it hit his hand, but he had got his arm up in the air at the time, and I reckon that would have been given 99 times out of 100. There's a good clear view of it on the Youtube highlights.

Totally disagree. No way that could possibly be handball and no ref would ever give it. He was less than a yard from their player and could not possibly have deliberately handled the ball, there was a millisecond between their player kicking it and it hitting Drew. The referee had a perfect view from about ten yards away and made the correct (non) decision.
Samy did say we should have had a penalty though, I've no idea which incident he was referring to though and can't remember anything controversial

Dale have been rough housed out of games on numerous occasions playing us, think the answer lies in there some where.

Novak was shoved from behind in the box. Looked stone wall to me but not seen it again.

Their player definitely caught him around the face ...happened more or less in front and level to where I was sat. Initially didn't think too much had happened apart from a coming together and both players going down. The ref initially gave us the free kick and then changed his mind.

I'm forced to infer from that response that your mathematical education took place post metrication, as your idea of what a yard was in the olden days is out by a factor of about 400%. You also need to check the definition of a millisecond as your estimate is erroneous by at least 2000%. Try actually looking at the footage.

The footage shows them very close and 'a yard' is not far out - they were certainly not 4 yards apart which is what you are suggesting.
I think the ref's decision was correct but such incidents do often result in a penalty so will accept we might be considered lucky.
