Colin Taylor? Leg spinner? Played against him a few times...hell of a bowler! I was once dropped 5 times off his bowling in a cultured 40 odd!!

Yes, a crafty old coot. He will take stacks of wickets more to go with the thousands he's no doubt taken!

Did me for a duck - poked forward for the leggy & made the mistake of thinking he's not up to a googly (nor even looking for it as I hadn't watching him bowl before going out) and the noise behind gave away the result!

Well done John.I notice you had 3 lbw decisions amongst your wickets. Its a good job you get umpire bescause you certainly would not have got them in the lower leagues where there are none.
This season I have started watching a lower league where I have a relative playing. To be blunt about it the cheating by player umpiring is unbelievable.Blatant lbw ,caught behind and run outs not given happen several times in every match I have seen.On two occasions I have seen somebody caught behind where everyone on the ground knew that it was out but the umpire refused to give and the batter refused to walk.
I would agree that if there are umpires let them make the decision but when there are none and they know they have hit the ball they should go.
I saw a match recently where the side batting first got a low score where there were umpires. The side batting second had 3 lbw against them and failed to get the runs but I am sure if there had been no umpires the result would have been otherwise.

I have however seen odd player walk without waiting and a few who have umpire fairly.

I have more of an issue with incompetent paid officials than player umpires, though I will say that playing in 8N last week and not having at least one umpire for the first time in 3-4ys (barring a game in the YDCL last year) makes a hell of a difference to the enjoyment of the game. Having two men out in the middle disrupts the team massively and you don't expect to get anything. We were silly and gave two LBWs but there were none in return.

We had a run-out not given the other week by one fella when he was out by literally feet. Unluckily for him he discovered the umpire's assessor at the game at the interval.

there does seem to be a give nothing attitude in the lower leagues - no good for player development either as they get used to being able to get their legs in the way without feer of being given out

For the last couple of seasons I have played without umpires for the first time. I wont claim to be saintly but now walk every time I know I have hit it if a teammate is umpiring; I am of an age and playing at a level when I don't want to put pressure on a colleague.

You cannot do anything about LBWs (and even with league umpires many are generous) but caught behind you generally know.

A first for me was after a big appeal and no signal from the umpire I had a discussion with the keeper before I walked; he was adamant that it had hit my glove when I wasn't certain. It was a ball that reared up and I pulled back rapidly and lost my orientation. Whether I would do it if I was in the eighties might be the question!

I'd always walk if I knew I was out, whether with league umpires or my own team mates standing, just summat I have always done

Even walked for LBW once!

One thing that does annoy me though is when players who do not walk get all mardy and shouty when one of the opposition dares to do the same - if you do not walk, you can't complain when others don't

He's a damn good bowler and dread to think how many wickets he has over the years and how many folk have fallen for the googly. I remember going out to face him whilst Sunil Bhatt was at the other end for us and he was giving me all sorts of tips and advice as to how to spot things...i still didnt have a clue!!

As for umpires etc, generally i've been lucky enough to play at a standard where umpires were normally present but when there havent been its a noticeable difference. The odd time i've umpired against my own team i've worked probably the opposite way to how a proper umpire would looking for any possible small reason not to give it but i have given team mates out on occasion when there was no reason i couldnt. In terms of caught behinds i generally think that you shouldnt put your team mate umpiring in a position where he has to make a decision for whatever reason. If you've hit it then walk and be done with it. It can take the enjoyment out of things as well when you've got 2 players batting, 2 padded up, 2 umpiring and 2 scoring....most of the team tied up doing something!

Thankfully most of the appointed umpires are generally ok but its the ones that want to make a point of being involved that annoy me. Most of the time the best umpires are the ones you dont notice all day and only at the end of the game as you are shaking hands do you take a moment to think he's done ok. Giving LBWs galore or sticking their oar in when its not needed just makes things awkward and i've been involved in many a game where LBW decisions have nearly made double figures and it leads to a bad atmosphere between the teams as one team begins to feel hard done by or a team tries to play on the fact the umpire is giving a lot. Even as a bowler i prefer the umpires that tend to give nothing compared to ones that give anything.

I agree about the walking for caught behinds with your teammate umpiring. I still get reminded, literally ten years later, about giving a Sheepbridge teammate out LBW when he'd 'middled it' according to him. Even the best umpires makes mistakes!

I remember playing in an inter works match and trying to hit a spinner out of the park but only managed to get a firm bottom edge onto my pads

To my amazement the bowler appealed for lbw and their umpire gave me out

When walking past them I mentioned that I had hit the ball and to be fair they both said to go back in

Tried to do the same to the next ball missed it and was hit on the pads straight in front

I walked off before he had time to appeal :windup

What a belter of a series this has been with New Zealand. Neither side deserves to lose it. The Ashes will have a very hard act to follow.

Playing in a vital end of season promotion match a few years ago with only 1 league umpire present we had our hosts 9 down (and 50 odd behind) on the final ball of the penultimate over with an inform batsman on strike and a rabbit at the other end. He pushed an easy single the rabbit didn't run eventually the rabbit set off but was only half way down the track when the run out was affected at which point the square leg (club) umpire threw himself on to the ground claiming he had slipped and thus wasn't in a position to give a decision and therefore he couldn't give the batsman. Cost us a few points
Derbyshire is Derbyshire
Yorkshire is Yorkshire

The Ugly Cricket vs Football conundrum rears its head again...

Look like missing Barnsley (H) United (A) Rochdale (H) Millwall (A) and Wigan (H) because of the cricket...

Barring injuries etc i'll be playing cricket as i pretty much always have done. I've missed the odd game at the start of cricket seasons for big football games but not that fussed about missing the early season football games in favour of playing games at the end of the cricket season.

Same, in the past i might have occasionally missed a game of cricket for a match but barring rain/injury i'll be playing cricket this year.
