Destroyed by Rushbury?

I remember Algar looking decent when he first broke into the team and he looked a reasonable prospect. Seem to remember some sort of Cruyff turn in either his own or the opposition box that came off and the crowd loved but got him a real rollicking from the sidelines.

Seem to remember him being a more promising version of Chris Bettney.

Did ok in one of those friday night games we tried at Saltergate when we had a bit of an injury crisis i think but never really featured again. Whoever was manager then and after were slated for not playing him and then letting him go but he's never been anywhere near a football league club again!

Well it's hardly a shock that people at the time slated him for it, he played a game, looked very impressive (set up one of Fletcher's goals with a cross from the left side in front of the Kop if memory serves) and was then barely seen again. At the time, it made sense to question why he was suddenly removed from the team after a promising performance.

Didn't play again until the last game of that season. Very odd.

A better strike force & midfield than when we eventually did go up, in my humble opinion.

Attack, midfield and defence. Getting one right isn't too hard, getting two right is a real achievement, but getting all three needs luck as well as genius.
Our defence was dire, behind a Championship strike force and a fairly average midfield.

I don't think I could name 1 of our defenders from that season. I'll have a stab at Steve Payne? Help anyone?

Infact he guided us to our worst league position in the last twenty years.

Despite having one of the better budgets in the division and seeing no fewer than four rivals docked points.

Then there was the squad full of has beens, never beens and never would be's that he left.

Forty grand and a double-your-money, two and a half year gig for Martin Gritton?

On a par with Rushbury and McMenemy as one of the worst appointments in my time watching Town.
