Good question.
I guess with some players its the snowball effect, whilst injured you're unable to tran so other areas/muscles/joints begin to deteriorate (by that I mean from those of an athlete at peak fitness) and then if the rehab isn't managed properly, they can't take the training as well when it starts up again. Also, you've also got injuries caused by undue stress due to changes in running/kicking techniques as your body tries to mask other injuries.
Wasn't Blathers back problems caused by his change in running style, due to old injuries failing to heal fully?

Blathers back problem came against MK Dons at home.
He fell after going for a header, landed in a "sitting" position from jumping for a ball, and all the weight was transferred straight into his spine. He went off shortly after this and from then on the rest, as they say, is history.

Mendy had the odd flash of decency and put in the cross for the own goal at Wembley- in fact, did okay in the JPT that year generally, but for a team fighting relegation in the league he was exactly what we didn't need- not a whole load of desire and kept going on solo runs and then losing possession. He might have been better in a better side.
