I suppose it is a generation thing. They didn't seem that big in the 70s when they were getting 4000/5000

Lots of clubs are bigger than us nowadays because they have had a golden 5 or 10 years

Whatever generation you're from Barnsley are a bigger club than us on every measure.

Before the game I saw the police escort of Barnsley fans. I was surprised at the number of idiots/ wannabee hooligans. 200 - 300 strong. Not seen that many since we have been at the new ground. That is the downside of the extra allocation of seats in east stand.

In your opinion, not in mine. They have been more successful recently but as has been said for many years we were in the ascendancy. Nothing is forever in football.

I don't think you can even argue it's a matter of opinion. We aren't talking about it being close either.

Average league position.

Average all time average attendance.

Club honours.

Your 'they got crap crowds for a few seasons when I was a lad' just doesn't wash at all.

Interesting, our record against them is in the positive!!

I can remember the 1971 4-1 away win, gesler and his mob chased them off their kop and Town fans swamped their end.

We must have been lucky I didn't see any of their nutters all day.

Wasn't that in December, and it was the first away win THAT YEAR.

my first away game , back in the mid 70s a pre season friendly , Barnsley where in the old 4th while we where in the 3rd , remember sitting in the old Barnsley stand and to the right of me was their kop and you could clearly see in blue spraypaint the words CFC and SPIREITE AGGRO on the back of their kop , i also remember their away end which without doubt was one of the biggest sh*tholes of an away terrace that iv ever stood on

I was staying in the Casa and watched the whole episode from the fourth floor. Police blocked both roads at the crossing to let the them cross. I would have said that there was more than 300, it took for ages. 8 police transits came in convoy and were waiting for stuff. To be honest they seemed like any other group of fans, I saw no trouble, but I wonder what the policing cost was.

Think club only pay for cops inside the stadium

Im glad we domt base football on your opinions then...barnsley have..

1.bigger fanbase ( not massive but bigger)
2.bigger ground
3.played at a far higher level
4.category 2 academy with their own facilities

Now im pretty sure there isnt much more you can add, they are a bigger club
ITS NOT THE WINNING,ITS THE TAKING APART

Weirdly Barnsley town has a population of 80,000, smaller than Chesterfield 102,000,
but their metropolitan borough has around 200,000 people

I was surprised to learn a few years ago that Burnley only has about 80,000 people was amazed that they manage to pull such big crowds

Suppose its the "been in the top flight" thing that keeps people interested

They had a season in premier league of course and that would have boosted the fanbase hugely and by playing at a good level for many years in championship many will have stuck around. If they wallow in L1 for a few seasons they will probably lose some fans and will definitely if they drop to L2

Their crowds have consistently been over 50% better than ours:
Comparisons:
1934 Barnsley Champs Level 3- 9,761 : 1931 Chesterfield Champs Level 3 : 6,275
1948 Both Level 2- Barnsley 21,262 : Chesterfield 15,372
1952 Both Level 2 - Barnsley 15,867 : Chesterfield 9,730
1980 Both chasing promotion Level 3 - Barnsley 11,890 : Chesterfield 7,760

It's a bigger place and probably far enough away from Sheffield and Leeds for fans not to be pulled that way. A bit of a backwater imo

I was at a cup game v Liverpool and there was over 35k on the ground. Can even remember man on loudspeaker system asking crowd to take several side steps to let rest of crowd in. Quite weird to watch the crowd swaying side to side in unison. Them were the days.

Oh I think a lot from Barnsley go to Leeds, or at least pretend to support them

Yes, although I thought Shayne Bradley scored that day, just before Rhys Day showed what a true scab he was and stuck his finger up his rolf arris.
