cast your mind back Dave and think what missing out cost us finacially we over stretched and when that gamble didnt pay off including just after Cox i.e Barlow . Look where we fell and the cost of it Yes it was great yes it will be remembered but we cannot go there again. The club debts are much to high. It is rumoured that Higdon wanted 6K a week to play for us we cannot afford big wages anymore.

In that season I remember us winning 2-1 at a strong Oxford side and thinking if we keep this side together till end of season we have a
chance of going up
What did Cox do? He made several big money signings and changed the team for a big home match against fellow contenders Blackburn
We lost 1-0 and everyone moaned about the team being changed and we were always on the back foot for the rest of the season
Time dulls the memory of what everyone thought was all sweetness and light under Cox
And he jumped ship to Newcastle at the start of the season after leaving us nearly bankrupt because we failed to get into what is now the Championship

If that team needed one addition, it was someone to challenge Walker for the second striker position, a true sniffer. The heartbeat of the team was doing great and indeed needed no change.

Still left a good side for 80/1 season mate - not his fault Barlow failed to take us up after being 4/5 to WIN the league in oct 80, although we were perhaps too successful in the cups resulting in 60 odd games played that season

It was a great time but I remember the near bankrupcy getting the ground trashed by Millwall and no money to repair it. Having hardly any players left and the club having a critical time finacially almost facing closure the point is the gamble cost us I wouldnt want to see us over stretch again football needs to be more financially aware these days.

To be fair that was a minor miracle. Very few players left from the Cox era, and playing kids like young Phil Brown. The signing of Bob Newton sealed it for us. Watching the side that was relegated the season before, I felt we were returning to 1960s level.

yep, and then the following season we had an injury to Wilson in the anglo Scottish cup, our form dipped and we missed out.
Was it bonnyman that was brought in mid season and it seemed to disrupt the side for a couple of games?
Our home form back then was awesome. away not so good. You expected a win everytime at saltergate, and the football was superb.
Is it a coincidence that everytime we did well from 1970 (ish) to 1985(ish) Ernie was our striker?

we almost went bust!!!!!!!!!!
had to sell a lot of the houses near the ground we owed and the council helped us out with a loan IIRC

It was Bonnyman along with John Stirk whose sole purpose seemed to be in giving the pigeons on the stand roof a hard time
