Did it go

I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

With the second verse everyone giving it a bit of "umph"....Seems shorter, easy to remember etc

Just reading through the posts it appears there is an argument for old and new songs , personally i enjoyed hearing and singing along to sailing.

However, here is my poor attempt at merging the old with the new with new lyrics for sailing which is open for abuse, criticism or improvement.

We are Spireites, super Spireites
Home again, score a goal
We are sailing stormy waters
Super Spireites, score a goal
Have passport will travel

Sing 'em ALL. As many and as diverse as possible, but the reason it worked so well at Burton was that it sounded triumphant. We'd sung virtually everything we'd got all game really well, but Sailing especially got us all together at a very fitting time...sounded immense!!

And unique to us

I don't know Firedodger. I said earlier that the music I listen to ain't really gonna go down well with the old & young.
The thing that gets me about this is that we've got this big debate about singing a fourty year old song that was sung regularly thirty years ago, then disappeared and has now made a whimpering return in the past 2-3 yrs. Now it's been sung well one time there's an almighty great uproar to sing it all the time, because I point out that the club has moved great strides in the past 4-5 yrs, changed its whole identity compared to the old Saltergate years we should be looking to start new traditions by choosing a new anthem.
All of us as supporters wanted the club to move into the 21st century but a number of supporters are wanting to relive the 20th century by making themselves feel good because they remember standing on the Kop at Saltergate singing a song. There's going to be a crowd of approximately ten thousand on Saturday, of which you could say at a minimum there is going to be 30% of youngsters, so why don't we grasp this opportunity with both hands and re-write the traditions of our new club by choosing a new anthem. After all. We still keep the blue flag flying from Saltergate to Wembley which keeps our tradition/spiritual home doesn't it?

So someone will decide what our anthem is before Saturday and then announce it to the 10k who will then presumably all sing it.

Get a grip man. If folk want to sing sailing or anything else let them get on with it, anything that creates an atmosphere and sailing certainly did satdy. You say it hasn't been sung for 30 years lol well it was even more impressive satdy then as everyone appeared to join in.

Lighten up and let the majority sing it if they want.

I suspect the drum will take over satdy and it will wait until a big away game next year

It was the number one single (1973) when the trend was to still adapt a decent chart hit into a song just like in the 60's e.g. Bachelor Boy (another one overdue an airing) this one just fitted without any adaptation, it suits the mood of being proud, loyal, united and sailing to victory, is loud and best of all unique, I don't recall hearing it sung by any other fans

Got a good airing at burton

You can't just say "that's it, ____ is our anthem". It will be a song that slowly becomes commonplace amongst the fans and sung maybe near the start and towards the end of games until people associate the song with Town and Town with the song. That might well be Sailing, but it's not something that can be forced, only nurtured.

It ain't broke so no need to fix it, changing the words changes the tradition, the song means a lot to many of us who belted it out on the kop in the 70's/80's and as clarevoyant says is something some of us remember those spireites sadly no longer with us

The words of the song should not be adapted by us for football imo. Fans of Millwall and other clubs use the Sailing tune in songs - but they dont sing the song as it was originally. We do and it makes us different. Its a good song for winning.

Firstly. Rod Stewart himself sounds like he's doing his level best not to fall asleep when singing it. It's slow and boring.
It's fourty years old, hasn't been our anthem for twenty years and you get the hump on when I say leave it in the past.
Secondly. I really, really don't give a flying fig what anthem any other club have sung for god knows how long and still sing now.
Thirdly. Does it honestly make any difference what group I listen to? But if it does then I will tell you. Metallica.

Don't get offended because you get a semi to a song that I think should be left in the past. I'm sure there's gonna be plenty of stuff we wouldn't agree on aswell.

yep................Metallica are crap for starters!

Id imagine the walk out music will remain the same but why not belt it out in the minute or so before kick off. Be an amazing start to the game

Azul.
I listen to music that isn't going to go down well with nearly all the public.
I just feel that we have an opportunity to stamp a whole new tradition onto our newly reborn club, to call a song that hasn't been sung religiously for twenty years "our anthem" is daft. Why do we want to live in the past?
We have an opportunity to start something that could stay with the club long after we have bit the bullet so why don't we?

Because in twenty years time somebody will be saying why are will singing this old rubbish :windup

Derbyshire is landlocked. Chesterfield is as far from the sea as almost anywhere in GB. So the relevance of "Sailing" to CFC is?
