I agree, it'll always stand the test of time, football aside it's an anthem type song so fits the bill.
Was it this season we had the clamour for she sells sanctuary to be the run out music? That was a complete unmitigated flop that was, I'm afraid like it or not, cheesy anthem type songs work!

I don't know Firedodger. I said earlier that the music I listen to ain't really gonna go down well with the old & young.
The thing that gets me about this is that we've got this big debate about singing a fourty year old song that was sung regularly thirty years ago, then disappeared and has now made a whimpering return in the past 2-3 yrs. Now it's been sung well one time there's an almighty great uproar to sing it all the time, because I point out that the club has moved great strides in the past 4-5 yrs, changed its whole identity compared to the old Saltergate years we should be looking to start new traditions by choosing a new anthem.
All of us as supporters wanted the club to move into the 21st century but a number of supporters are wanting to relive the 20th century by making themselves feel good because they remember standing on the Kop at Saltergate singing a song. There's going to be a crowd of approximately ten thousand on Saturday, of which you could say at a minimum there is going to be 30% of youngsters, so why don't we grasp this opportunity with both hands and re-write the traditions of our new club by choosing a new anthem. After all. We still keep the blue flag flying from Saltergate to Wembley which keeps our tradition/spiritual home doesn't it?
Life goes on. Whatever happens.

Yes so why does it hurt to have another method to remember Saltergate by?

Goku. How many years did you go to Saltergate and how many times did you sing Sailing?

I don't care if that comment is about me or not but the insult that you have posted onto a thread that has been a reasonable debate before you turn up is one that can be done without.

Went for three or four years. A few times, not many. I don't care what reason we sing it as long as it sounds good tbh, did you go to Burton? Sounded brilliant.

No. I didn't go to Burton.
I'm not trying to say that we shouldn't ever sing it (although looking through some of the posts it looks that way). I'm saying that to have it as an anthem when it's not been an anthem for twenty years is daft.
Why wasn't it sung when we won the championship four yrs ago?
Why wasn't it sung when we won the JPT?
Let's move with the times like we wanted the club to do.

Like I say, it's hard to think about choosing a new anthem if nobody is coming up with any options. Again there was a lot of appetite for she sells sanctuary, but it just didn't work, aside from a nice bit of guitar work it's just not a football song. What we like won't necessarily translate into a football song, and like it or not sailing sounds good.

And sing what? Just follow what the big boys are doing?

Genuine question, I'm easy, don't care if we sit there in complete silence

It was sung when we won the League. At Oxford away, very loudly IIRC

Azul.
I listen to music that isn't going to go down well with nearly all the public.
I just feel that we have an opportunity to stamp a whole new tradition onto our newly reborn club, to call a song that hasn't been sung religiously for twenty years "our anthem" is daft. Why do we want to live in the past?
We have an opportunity to start something that could stay with the club long after we have bit the bullet so why don't we?

The threads that discuss anthems descend in chaos with everyone suggesting their niche likes

Either adopt an old classic or a cheesy but relevant number that everyone knows but probably dislike

Rewriting tradition...... surely that would destroy it.. The reason a tradition generally survives is because it has history. You can't rewrite it.

Most modern songs would be terrible to have as an anthem IMO. you need something easy to sing, and simple rhythm. You'll be hard pressed to find a modern song that fits that bill.
