this relentless player churn involving players who seem perfectly good enough to play well at this level is a bit red-flaggy for me. just my initial thoughts, i obviously don't know the circumstances

Liked Whelan, very disappointed he's gone. Looked very good at this level from what I saw and scored a few goals.

Not happy, he was a pacy midfielder not afraid to tackle.

In the context of his sudden disappearance from the first XI, and barely being able to get off the bench for the last few months of the season, it's not all that much of a surprise. Clarke's development and Mandeville's upturn in form makes it tough for Whelan, but something has clearly gone off for this all to start in the first place. His pressing and work rate was great, and seemed to suit Rowe's set-up perfectly, he made and scored goals, and had a good link-up with Asante. He's clearly good enough to play at this level - my only doubt about him was his fitness and ability to last 90 minutes. I assumed they'd work on his fitness over the summer to get him up to speed, but he's been binned. Something has clearly gone off imo.

Gone from the subject of a rumoured bid from Stockport to being paid to leave in a matter of weeks.

This, along with other talk of fall outs and the chopping and changing backroom staff at the drop of a hat has set a distant alarm bell ringing for me.

I'd heard of off the field problems with Whelen, without any specific details, for the last few months. Not a surprising exit.

His ball control is poor and he can't turn with it. I read that he played much deeper for his previous teams cos he can only play the way he is facing. I liked his initial enthusiasm and effort but unfortunately the skill level in't there.

Loved his energy. Was a real breath of fresh air when Rowe signed him.

Oh yeah, this manager signed him, din't he.

So we have to ask what happened between then and now?

Hope rumours this is another personal rather than performance based exit are wrong...

PS: speaking of rumours, how widespread is the one about Town legend - and player agent - Kev Davies being handed a role in recruitment?

Easiest was to absolve management of any blame, say you've heard rumours and blame it all on the player. Seems to be becoming more common a thing as our management can do no wrong. The player turnover is something to be a little concerned about.

hmmm, interesting one, i know of no rumours at all, never do really. made an impact for us for sure and was a big part of our initial upturn in form, point to argue that he played his best games when asante was in the side... discuss, don't think he'll have a problem finding another club.
when you are building a team going for promotion you need a squad that is right on and off the pitch, maybe this is in Rowe's thinking as he plans the next season. got to trust that mandeville for one will maintain the form he showed towards the end of the season if he does and clarke, well clarke is just a very good player, then you can see that whelan may have been spending more time on the bench.

We are blessed with a group of attacking midfielders in Mando, Clarke (first choice selections), then you have Rowley, even Rowe can play in that deep forward role...Whelan was down the pecking order.

He was one of a number of initial signings that really turned a poor side around into an exciting one, & he will be remembered for that....but as the squad develops & the quality increases, there are always going to be casualties unfortunately.

I thought in his last few appearances he was increasingly struggling to get into the game for us and looking at the squad we do have a lot of players in that position.
