Just heard some owd chap on't radio explaining that the origin of the 'Zigger zagger' chant was when some lads from a Manchester grammar school went to the Olympics in Rome in 1960 and heard German fans chanting "Zicken zacken" (whatever that means) and copied it at Old Trafford with a response of "Oy oy oy". So he reckons, anyway- I often wondered where it came from.
I'll get me coat
I'll get me coat
These go to eleven.

Late sixties or early seventies play -'Zigga Zagga'.
Peter Terson, who wrote "Zigger Zagger" for the National Youth Theatre, was from Stoke, and it is likely he first heard the chant there.
