About 15 years ago the current Mrs Burrows and I were sat on a beach in St Ives in about November watching the surfing types.

The herring gulls in St Ives and other Cornish towns are renowned for being brutal and will dive at anything.

Anyhow, this 'chap' with long hair was rolling himself a Camberwell carrot when down pops Mr Gull, grabs hold of his Golden Virginia 2oz packet and off it goes, flying low across the beach.

We were delighted to then watch aforesaid 'chap' chase the gull all the way along the beach without trying to bring too much attention to himself.

He didn't give up and chased the bird for a long way - so when he walked past later I said to him if he got his tobacco back? He then told me that the bird had dropped the packet having left most of the tobacco but must have swallowed his quarter of hash.

Stone the crows...
