NO THANKS

You can't blame a then 31 year old midfielder for jumping at a 3 year contract. If he stayed he wouldn't have touched the ball anyway with Saunders ordering the players to hoof it all the time.

Nonsense, Roberts had a year left onnhis contract we sold him and received a fee.

Truth has it in 2014, DA told Cook to sell Roberts as he was on far too much wage. Cook got annoyed and started to look elsewhere for work and the rest is history.

Roberts was always leaving that summer and had told the club as much prior to the play offs from what I understood at the time. Whether things would've changed had we gone up I don't know but Roberts was keen to follow Cook out the door.

Does it really matter if he was going before the final kick off of that season? Does it really matter that it was his decision or the Chairmans?
What he did for us whilst he was here was light the place up every time he got the ball. Yes he was frustrating at times because he kept hold of the ball too long but in my 30+yrs of watching town I would easily say that he was our most exciting player we've had. Even more than Sir Jack.
But if the question is, would I have him back? Then I would say no, because it looks like Cooky knew how to get the best out of him and if Roberts re signed I don't think that he'd be hard working enough for Caldwell. In Cookys team he had Morsey and Ryan doing the donkey work and whilst we have Weir we really need another battler in the centre that can lay it off to Reed who is currently our playmaker.
Life goes on. Whatever happens.

There was never a period when Gary Roberts didn't do the business for us, in style. I'd have him back if on a low wage for the season.
These go to eleven.

I am with Sean Dyche. As per yesterday's press conference asked what kind of player he was looking for he replied, 'one who gets the ball, and whacks it into the net, whacks it into the net really hard'.

Quote from Chris Turner at a fans forum meeting.

"We were that desperate to get Gary Roberts, who was the club's highest earner off the wage bill we would have actually let him go to Portsmouth without any transfer fee being paid".

There's a bit of the Gary Roberts persona that gets forgotten - the promotions achieved at the clubs he has played for. I might be wrong but this to me infers that he has a very positive influence in the dressing room that has a value and must not be underrated.

His enthusiasm is infectious and his skills are obvious. If he's fit and he's willing to take an enormous drop in wages perhaps because he's got a huge pay off from Portsmouth, then he's a bonus for any squad.
Get it on, bang the gong , get it on

To clarify, GW isn't coming back to Chesterfield - 10, 20, 80,100 or any percentage of fitness.

Gary Roberts played a hugely influential role in everything that went right when he was here. Infact he could single handedly win games, as he did when a stubborn Walsall side looked like leaving the Proact with a point until his vision opened them up.

However he also spent spells on the sidelines and missed training due to what I was then told were deteriorating knees.

Knees that've since had two more years' of football.

But anyway, it's all irrelevant, as I hear he's posted a definitive 'No' to questions of his return on social media.
