Just found out the sad news from a mate.

I've known Steve over 30 years, after joining AFC Saltergate in the Sunday league where he later became manager (at the time known at St Helens FC) .

I was only talking to him a week last Tuesday as we watched Heanor v Staveley, Steve loved football at all levels and was a great bloke only 58, will be sadly missed

Just heard the news. Steve was one of my best friends and we've been watching Town together since 1963-4 season. I last saw him in the Tup after the Wycombe game and we talked about Town with an enthusiasm which has never dulled over the years. He once said to me. 'Just think, when we are gone, all those Town games we'll miss. I'll miss you terribly mate.

I've been struggling with this since the sad news came through this morning and will be doing for years to come. Steve and I attended many matches together and have been fellow Spireites for well over 40 years. To say he was a football fanatic would be an understatement first and foremost a Spireite (i doubt he's missed 10 home games in the past 30 years) but also an avid watcher of none league football.

In saying that it's his true loves at this time that my heart goes out to his wife, daughter and step daughter you know my sorrow

A useful player in his younger days as mentioned by Moondog. I know he made many friends through football of which many may read/partake in this board. If you want to know any arrangements PM me and I'll keep you informed

Saturday what ever the attendance the ground will feel empty as I think it will be the first time in 23 years you have been absent at an home game, Nah you'll be there in spirit

I'll miss you mate

Sad news indeed. As moondog has already said Steve managed the St Helen's team that we played in. He would spend most of the match ranting and raving, but after the final whistle he would always be laughing with/at us ! I was talking to him a couple of weeks ago as he was leaving the pub and making his way to the ground and his enthusiasm for the club shone through. Good memories of a good man.

I got the news tonight from Clarevoyant (Mick) and it has totally stunned me - I am in tears reading the posts tonight.
I'm not sure I can add anything to what has already been said on here, suffice to say I have known Steve for the last 19 years and he was one of the best men I have ever had the privilege to call my friend.

I played cricket with Steve (and he was a useful player) but what I enjoyed most was listening to the many stories that he, Mick Haw and many others had that all revolved around football and cricket from whatever level it was being played.

As a bright-eyed 16 year old I would sit in the pub after cricket had finished (we'd usually lost!!)and listen as they reeled off stories of Town players from yesteryear, ones that I had only read about, yet I felt that I was almost there, going back in time as Hollet and Randall combined to score, Moss missed his obligatory sitter before scoring two and also about how crap Mick Astbury REALLY was!!

I also learned alot about non-league football from Steve and have spent many-a-pleasant hour at places like Gresley and Holbrook St. Michaels whilst laughing at Mick trying to referee or run the line whilst we enjoyed a sociable pint or two.....

Sorry to go on but I felt I had to put something down in writing to let the people who didnt know him understand what a top bloke he was.
Town has lost a true fan and many of us have lost a true friend.

RIP Steve....at least you will have the best seats in the house now.
