I was genuinely shocked and saddened when I heard this. Although I haven't seen much of Steve lately, I have known him for years having lived in the same village and shared common interests of football and drinking. He had a really affable nature and will be sorely missed by many, not least his family. My thoughts are with them.

I've been struggling with this since the sad news came through this morning and will be doing for years to come. Steve and I attended many matches together and have been fellow Spireites for well over 40 years. To say he was a football fanatic would be an understatement first and foremost a Spireite (i doubt he's missed 10 home games in the past 30 years) but also an avid watcher of none league football.

In saying that it's his true loves at this time that my heart goes out to his wife, daughter and step daughter you know my sorrow

A useful player in his younger days as mentioned by Moondog. I know he made many friends through football of which many may read/partake in this board. If you want to know any arrangements PM me and I'll keep you informed

Saturday what ever the attendance the ground will feel empty as I think it will be the first time in 23 years you have been absent at an home game, Nah you'll be there in spirit

I'll miss you mate

well said Mick, a truly tragic loss, especially for you as I know you've been best mates ever since I met you both about 31 years ago.

Steve and I were only comparing our anoraky stats the other week, namely how many matches we'd been to last season, I was sure after an unprecedented season of non league ground hopping (in between town matches, and the first time I've counted) I would have beaten him with my 100, but it was a draw, more or less the norm for Steve, some effort as he never to my knowledge owned a car.

He loved the game and life, he will be very sorely missed

Just heard the news. Steve was one of my best friends and we've been watching Town together since 1963-4 season. I last saw him in the Tup after the Wycombe game and we talked about Town with an enthusiasm which has never dulled over the years. He once said to me. 'Just think, when we are gone, all those Town games we'll miss. I'll miss you terribly mate.

well said John, a really sad loss

Just found out the sad news from a mate.

I've known Steve over 30 years, after joining AFC Saltergate in the Sunday league where he later became manager (at the time known at St Helens FC) .

I was only talking to him a week last Tuesday as we watched Heanor v Staveley, Steve loved football at all levels and was a great bloke only 58, will be sadly missed

Had the privelege of knowing Steve and also played with him at AFC Saltergate/St Helens.Great bloke sadly missed RIP Steve.

Sad news indeed. As moondog has already said Steve managed the St Helen's team that we played in. He would spend most of the match ranting and raving, but after the final whistle he would always be laughing with/at us ! I was talking to him a couple of weeks ago as he was leaving the pub and making his way to the ground and his enthusiasm for the club shone through. Good memories of a good man.

he had good reason to rant and rave RS "you're a shambles" became a catchphrase, but like you said it was all over come the final whistle and back to the banter and a pint, Steve was what grass roots football was all about...

How very sad and at no age.

I send out my condolences first and foremost to his family who will be struggling most with his loss. Also to his mates on this message board who obviously loved the man. I never knew him but he sounds like a bloke I would get on with.

R.I.P buddy.

Very, very upset. Known Steve since the early 70s and the buses from the Social Club to away games. For years back then he hardly ever missed a Town game, well remember going to Bournemouth with him on a February night in 74-75 when there were just 4 Town fans there. Did a lot of “socialising” with him particularly in the Market and Gardeners

Rest in peace, Steve, love always from Rosemary and Ken

Last spoke to Steve at Heanor v Staveley recently. Not many non-league matches that I attented and Steve wasnt there.

Our conversation always turned round to how the Town were playing etc. A friendly guy who will be sorely missed.

RIP Steve

Just caught up with this thread, sad news indeed.

Played cricket with Steve many years ago and roomed with him on a few of the tours Mick organised back then.
Last saw him on neutral turf at Sheffield FC and naturally for several swiftys afterwards in the Coach.

Top bloke and a great influence on me at a time when I needed it.
One of lifes good guys, my thoughts go to his family
