And now for 2014/15

The last time they were promoted, Chesterfield FC returned straight back down the following season. With more experience and professionalism on board this time around, survival will be the least of their ambitions in 2014/15. Mike Firth talks to club chairman Dave Allen

Even before Chesterfield FC players had their Division Two medals firmly in their grasp, chairman Dave Allen told Twist magazine of the club’s plans to locate an important missing piece to add to their first team jigsaw for 2014/15.

Working with team manager Paul Cook and chief executive Chris Turner, he said no stone would remain unturned in a search for a proven marksman to lead the
side in Division One. Not since the days of Jack Lester and Craig Davies have the Spireites had the luxury of fielding a regular goalscorer - someone who will bag a couple of dozen goals in a season, with the occasional hat-trick thrown in to delight the fans.

There is much to be said for a team which offers a healthy number of occasional goalscorers, but kicking off the new season with a recognised goal-getter would certainly lift everyone’s confidence for the challenges ahead. Said the chairman: “We have had an excellent season, finishing as worthy champions and also going back to Wembley where we were narrowly beaten by a team from a higher division. “But if there is anything we have lacked it is having a 20-goals-a-season striker in our team. This is a priority we are going to address in the off-season.”

Dave Allen is well used to getting his man; it was his mission to persuade Sir Elton John, and now Sir Tom Jones, to perform at Whittington Moor. And we understand another high-calibre performer is already being lined up for the summer of 2015. Together with Chris Turner, he also identified a winner when the
club was looking for a new manager a little over a year ago. He explained: “I was sat with Chris after we had played Accrington, a club on about 60% of our wage bill. I said I don’t know much about their manager, however he has impressed me with his enthusiasm.”

Soon afterwards, Paul Cook was being interviewed for the job in Dave Allen’s casino in Leeds and the Spireites had their new team boss. Said the chairman: “Cookie and Chris Turner have been a breath of fresh air to this business; they have brought a new level of professionalism to the club - something which was badly needed. “Cookie’s brand of football is attractive, attacking football which most people want to see.” Confirmed Chris Turner: “Work has already been going
on behind the scenes to ensure that the squad is ready. Last time, we did not strengthen enough prior to the start of the season and we then spent too much money on trying to stay in the division, but that won’t happen again.”

Although football remains the core business activity, Chesterfield FC now has several other income streams. In addition to offering first rate matchday hospitality and banqueting facilities which are the pride of North Derbyshire, the open-air summer concerts are also important ways of earning money. “And we need it because the club has a big debt,” reminded Dave Allen.

Following the massive success of the Sir Elton John spectacular in 2012, it is believed Chesterfield considered artists including Stevie Wonder, Lionel Ritchie and Mick Hucknall as a follow-up. Dave Allen, however, made it a personal mission to bring Sir Tom Jones to The Proact. “We had to find a really big star, someone of equal calibre to Elton, and I was convinced Tom Jones was the right guy,” said Dave. “I have known of him since the early days because he started in music about the same time as I did. My band played on the Mecca circuit for Eric Morley and we used to play all Tom’s hits. “He is one of the few people whose voice hasn’t lost any of its quality. He has a tremendous range and sounds every bit as good now as he did in the 1960s and the fact that he has been such a big part of ‘The
Voice’ has helped to broaden his appeal. “Tom has been an icon and there is no doubt he remains an icon.”

Recalling the success of the Elton John event, Dave said the stadium offers super acoustics. “Elton John made it known that it was one of the best stadiums he
had played, regarding sound. He stayed to sign about 40 autographs afterwards, which was very unusual for him, so he was obviously very comfortable performing here.

“It is a big event for the football club but also massive for the town. People will be coming to Chesterfield from 100 miles or more to see Tom Jones. “That weekend, all the hotels, bars and pubs will be full and the taxis will have one of their best days of the year.” Not content with staging just the one show this year - on Saturday, June 7th - the Spireites are hosting a second major event the following day when a younger generation of music fans will be able to enjoy the sounds of Tinie Tempah, Labrinth, Katy B, Lawson, Union J, Dynamite and Tich.

When a lot was still reliant upon the success of the summer concerts... Looking at the article it was potentially written before the end of last season.

Reading that, there's obviously nothing to worry about. The season hasn't started yet. The club is more professional now. No stone will be left unturned in the search for a proven marksman. The squad will be very strong in time for the big kick off. The club won't make the same mistakes again.

As i said, before the end of the season As you pointed out he says "worthy champions", therefore looks like it was sourced after the final whistle when we knew we were champions, and before they'd collected their medals.

Crikey you are desperate to add 2+2 and find 5 arent you!

So hardly anything to pin on given the unknown of a future event i.e. The concerts.
