Historically it has to be Mansfield, but now it is more and more becoming Rotherham. In my opinion you can’t have a rivalry with a team you don’t play season after season, ask yourself which fixture you first looked up when they were published!
Fight for your opinions, but do not believe that they contain the whole truth, or the only truth.

so if we go up & rotherham dont do we have to find a new rival? rotherham will never be a rival theyre just a local team we used to beat all the time.
first fixture? usually first & last away games, then seaside trips, then any london trips, then a close look in the hope gillingham have been thrown out our division.

Any localish side will be a `rival`,but who are the side you love to beat, or want to lose?

Mansfailed every single time.

You are of course correct, some of my happiest football memories are of beating Mansfield, and saddest the rare defeats they inflicted. I still remember the cold shivers when hearing “He’s only a poor little Spireite.”, but it’s been so long since we played them it’s all starting to fade. With the Windy Millers antics over the last few years and Ronnie’s mouth always good for “stirring the waters”, it is starting to become a real rivalry, but do admit it is not fully developer yet!

I'm completely indifferent when it comes to Rotherham. Can't decide whether I'm happy to see them do well or not. Other than being 'quite near' there's nothing there unless the game is a big one.

Other :

In football terms - whoever we are playing next or whoever we might be competing with directly for a promotion spot . Don't see how any team can be a rival if they aren't even in the same division. Only Rotherham fulfil that criteria but they are no more our main rival than Wycombe

In broader terms our main rivals are Manchester United followed by Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and any other "top" team that local kids might support instead of CFC on account of Premiership TV saturation

Tut-tut-tut, 'D'; this Mansfield thing is becomming something of an obsession of your's.

Seriously though, i know they'll never be bona fide 'rivals' but i can never forget the crusade launched by certain Brighton fans to get us kicked out the league, the abuse hurled at Town fans, players, and officials from everyone involved at the club, and the totally hypocritical way those self-important southerners behaved in the wake of our (ahem) problems.

A plague on their house, say i.

Anyway, i'm just off to vote for erm...erm...erm...

Has to be Mansfield. The play off games aginst them in 95 were 2 of the best games I've evr been to. The tension at the games, genuine loathing and rivalry isn't matched by any other team for me.
If only....

In my lifetime Rotherham have been bigger rivals but they never give as much of a buzz to play against than Mansfield did. Difficult question to answer as it depends on what you interpret your rivals as. I think main rivals can only be those who would consider us to be their main rivals - in which case there is a case for Mansfield, but they're probably more suited to hating Alfreton now, which leaves... Rotherham? Notts County?

With tongue in cheek I'll nominate Wrexham - I think we have still played more games against them than any other club, played thm in a Cup quarter final and.....

''''they are Welsh.

Tough one. At the moment blatantly Rotherham. Mansfield are our biggest local derby but we dont play em anymore cos there so poor. but next season it'll change again. I for one will b looking at when our trip t Hillsborough is. And when theyre here. Just my opinion though...

I voted for Rotherham because i don't class a mid table non league side as our main rivals now.

For me personally, it will always be Mansfield I regard as our fiercest rivals. The game I always looked forward to, especially the away fixture. Used to get that sick to the pit of your stomach feeling when the game was in progress as losing to them, (not that it's happened too often), would be a fate worse than death. Something I never got when we were playing Wednesday, the blades, the millers nor notts forest or county.

A bit off the wall - but Northampton Town.

Because I have to live there and take the grief from the locals (where are they now though:))

and

Because we have had some good battles down the years - not least the 'spear' throwing incident at Saltergate.

Ideally, I want Derby County to be our closest rivals because that will mean we are in the same league (the championship!). Derbyshire bragging rights and all that.

Still can't fathom people voting for Rotherham, yes we have played them more recently than we have Mansfield but historically they are nothing more than erm...we have been in the same division as them thats all.

1. Mansfield

2. Sheffield Wednesday
3. Sheffield United

on a further footnote, have you noticed when we play Rotherham, some of their supporters call the Chesterfield supporters "scabs"....?????
