Done 7 years for murder in Latvia.
The problem is, with EU legislation, we have no choice, we have no say, we have to allow these people in.
Good innit.

Any ounce of common sense would say hang on, should we issue a visa/work permit to this guy? However this is the EU - the great political project and nothing must get in the way.
We have just had a referendum, but it was the wrong one with the wrong independence question

Won't happen. None of the main 3 parties will do it, despite what they say

Incorrect. There is power in law to prevent EU nationals with a serious criminal record from entering the UK. There is also power to deport EU nationals with a serious criminal record. The issue seems to be in the mechanics of sharing information between the various EO member states.

I think any Government would need enough time to debate, plan, engage, inform, mislead, confuse, make up as they go along...
I would also hope at the time they came into office there were bigger fish to fry.
I think it will be a hot topic come the next election, more than ever before.

No rocket science required. How about an EU-wide criminal record data base with all the details wired in to the UK Border Agency computer? Details would come up whenever a passport is swiped at the border. The DM can go on all it likes about money spent on aid. How about all the money spent on 43 separate Police forces in the UK, each whith its own Chief Constable, Headquarters, mangement infrastructure, procurement arrangements etc etc?

So a 14 yr old school girl is seen on cctv walking down a canal path, she then goes missing along with her bag and phone, a few minutes later a convicted Latvian murderer, who was also suspected of a sexual assault on another school girl in this country a few years ago, cycles down the same path. He , now the girl has disappeared , cannot be found!.....it's a joke right?
Well of course it isn't to the girls family and any decent minded people..it's a disgrace!

the issue is the lack of political will to try restrict entry into the UK.

Actually, the issue is finance. The previous government set up the e-Borders project. The intention was to check out anyone trying to enter the UK as passenger or crew who had any sort of serious record as a criminal or terrorist. The project turned into a long running overspend and this government abandoned it in order to stem the flow of money. It was a good idea, though and deserved to be properly planned and budgeted.

The irony is that law makes no difference to EU nationals, they can come and go as they please. I've seen non EU people with all sorts of professional qualifications struggle to get access to the UK, people who could make a massive difference to the quality of life for the UK populace, yet some pikey from some Eastern European hell hole gets to waltz right in adding to the great many peasants (I include many UK nationals in that) that live here already.
