Going on train so we can have a few beers in Birmingham on Sat. Is there a cheaper way of doing it? Looked at town to Tamworth on the Wayfarer and Tamworth to Walsall at just under £20 but wondered if there is a cheaper way?

Don't think the Wayfarer gets you to Tamworth? Its Burton you need to split at isn't it?

I looked around for some deals on split singles yesterday, but i couldn't get a combo that was sufficiently cheaper than the off peak return to Bescot from Town to justify missing out on the better flexibility that ticket gives you (i spent a few years living in Birmingham and am looking forward to having a few pints in the city centre on Saturday!)

It seems that you really need a railcard if you want a decent deal on the train.

Looks like a Wayfarer to Burton and return from BOT to Bescot is the cheapest. I believe it could be necessary to catch a train to Brum that actually stops at Burton to do this so you may have to change at Derby to pick up another train. I am catching a Nottingham to Cardiff from Derby. With my railcard I am paying £6 for the Wayfarer and £7.85 return from Burton as opposed to £23.85 from Town to Bescot.

You *do* have to catch a Burton stopping train to do this, otherwise you don't have a valid ticket.

That's what I have done John, 9.06 which stops at Burton. Cheap day with railcard.

Do you have to travel on a specific train?

Between Burton and Walsall nope, just open for me meaning I can come back at anytime. Wayfarer also isn't set trains.

Only train I have booked is the 9.41 from Burton to New Street as I'm on 9.06 from town which calls there. Rest I have no reservations for.
