Only recently found out that Chesterfield has an observatory. We've been tonight and it was amazing. They were all so nice, explained everything to my 8 year old, we could use their telescopes too. Will definitely be going back.

In a cul de sac off Newbold Road, near the Nag's head and opposite the Tesco Express.

That's been there for Donkeys years, remember going when I was a kid. Didn't realise it was still open.

Was originally called the Barnett Observatory after Horace of the same name who was the main instigater of it being built

Horace used to work at the old Chesterfield Tube Company and has been dead for at least 35 years giving some idea of how long it has been there

He built it with all recycled materials and it was originally built because he'd built one in Sheffield and they'd not given him any credit for it, so he came to chesterfield and built a bigger one ;) started in 1957 and opened in 1960. The brick walls built from old house bricks, the telescope built from gas cylinders. The dome built from the back of Huleys buses!!

Telescope has been out now, just been looking at the moon. Incredible to look at the craters and the dark and light side 🌒

Also found a great app, skeye. You point your phone/tablet at the sky and it tells you what you're looking at. You can also put in what you want to see and it gives you directions to view it ;)

I've a vague memory of visiting this place with my grandad when he was alive. Must have been 16 or more years ago
