But thats not deleting his account is it? Maybe he doesn't want to be associated with the message board anymore. Not allowing people to delete their account is so wrong on many levels.

I'm not sure where deleting accounts leaves the database in terms of posts associated with said account. Potentially an account could be disabled but the database will probably need something to associate all the posts from said account against.

Looks like you can buy an add in to allow users to delete their own account if someone wants to pay for it!

It seems Moderators decide if you can delete your account or not. That's terrible.

SirAlf should be free to delete his/her account without having to justify that request to anyone, its shocking.

Edit: I would pay for it if I thought SirAlf would definitely be able to close his account but having the add-in is not a guarantee.

Quite correct Mark. You should be able to delete your account when ever you wish. In the small print of the board does it say anywhere that once created you cannot delete your account? Mind you Facebook I am led to believe is exactly the same.

By not logging in he isn't associating with it.

Not to be pedantic, but moderators gave absolutely no access to people's accounts. They can only moderate posts and posters. Admins have the pleasure of dealing with accounts.

Not sure I agree with the right to delete an account, it's like trying to withdraw in real life everything you've said, maybe we'd like to but it's not possible.

It also opens up the possibility of posters re-registering pretending to be someone else if the source log in data is lost. There is also the accountability factor if posters know what they post leaves a permanent record they will think twice about posting something malicious, libellous or offensive

So what you are saying is that accounts cant be removed/deactivated/or anything similar, ever?

If thats the case, then why does the link provided say you can delete accounts providing the add-in has been purchased?

I read something today which I find totally horrible and although I believe the person who wrote it has the right to express his/her views, I really don't want to be associated with it and by being a member I feel I am.

I find that a very odd way of looking at things, whatever was said.

It can be done but what he's saying is he disagrees with posters being given the option to do so.

I'm saying nothing of the sort, just giving a view that not being able to delete an account isn't necessarily a bad thing.

If you really don't want to be associated with it don't log in, anyone bothered to look would be able to see this, so your point would be made

On the other hand Mark, there are instances where deleting an account is legitimate. I should like to delete my old Facebook account, not because it contains anything libelous but because of all the personal information I naively submitted, not knowing it could be easily hacked by criminals. My account is currently dormant - it can't be deleted - but can be re-activated if I choose. I suspect even dormant accounts are hackable.
