So its come round again ( I swear the years are getting shorter ), and it would be nice to send our American friends home empty handed again. In Rory Mcllroy surely we are witnessing one of the all time great golfers although of course this is a team game. Last times efforts were some feat and I`m sure the yanks will still be smarting from that when they must have thought it was virtually in the bag. C`mon lads lets show em again!

Not a great morning after it was looking pretty good...especially Mickleson\Bradley nicking the final game on the last. Onwards to this afternoon.

Great first day and I kind of predicted that it may be lesser names that gained the points, be interesting to see how poulter goes on I think he has become a ryder cup hype machine and I think he set himself up for a fall his form on the course this year has been woeful, also sergio needs resting apart from a miracle shot at the last he was terrible and they got lucky

Great to see Westwood holing big puts and stepson and rose look like our real big game players.

Yep I`m not keen on Poulter, he`s just a golfer who likes to big himself up who i`m sure makes a decent living but when it comes to the big competitions usually falls woefully short. Too much was made of him last time. The players following him did well on their merits and not because he won his match. He`s in love with himself and deluded.

Should be a cracking day, looking forward to tuning in! Europe should win it from here but there first 4 or 5 with the big hitters all going against each other should be interesting.

Won easy in the end, although we did give them a sniff early on before McDowell took charge.

Are we getting better or are the Yanks getting worse?

The world rankings would suggest that they are getting worse, but I've said it before and I'll say it again, Europe play as a a team and the Yanks play as individuals.

Why don't the world rankings suggest Europe are getting better?

Because 5 to 6 years ago the top 20 in the rankings were dominated by the Yanks (15 or more) with the odd European (Montgomerie & Westwood mainly) and a small smattering of other regions (Ernie Els & Nick Price for example) now the other regions have stepped up with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia. With Phil Mickleson getting older and Tiger Woods with his injuries/indiscretions the Americans are nowhere near as dominant. There are still only 6 Europeans in the top 20 but that is because the world rankings are weighted towards the USPGA tour (which has an event nearly every week) rather than the European & Asian tours which are less prolific with events.

Great competition again, kicking myself now that I didn't dig deep and go up to Gleneagles.
I felt really sorry for Gallagher who must have been desperate to play on his home patch but ended up severely limited because of the first days horror pairing. I think people are being a bit harsh on Poulter, good player who really enjoys playing in the Ryder cup, and even after the weekend his record still stands up there with the best of them.

Clarke & Westwood as the next team captain and vice captain?

Clarke a shoe in but, I would envisage that he would want his old partner by his side.

Clarke in 2 years time and Miguel-Angel Jimenez in 4 at a guess.

You would have thought Westwood will still be playing in the next few Ryder cups, surely Clarke still has ambitions to play as well?
Jiminez looks a good choice, Paul lawrie a possible, can't see Europe opting for a french captain in four years as there isn't anyone really qualified.

I wouldn't exactly call him qualified, one ryder cup appearance and got mullered in his singles match. Nice bloke but that isn't really inspirational captain material is it? I think you need someone with a bit more of a track record.

Not sure bottling his chance to win the open when all he needed was a 6 on the par 4 last and being all over the papers with his trouser legs rolled up trying to hit it out of the water is a great advert for a Ryder Cup captain! ;)
