Now that's the type of midfield player we are desperate for now. Held the ball calmly without panic in midfield, used it well with intelligent passes to keep us in possession and get our attackers going at the opposition defence. M.A. was a player criminally undervalued by some of our supporters. Well we can all see now what a pathetic shambles our 'midfield' is now without a player of his class. Now we can't hold the ball for more than two seconds, and give it away continually, putting pressure immediately back onto our defence.

Allot read the game very well. He often broke up play or put in the decisive last ditch tackle just because he read the game better than most. Very under rated all round as a player. In this league he’d look champions league quality.

Agreed MA had the ability to stand where the loose or second ball fell and as a result we kept hold of the ball for longer periods certainly more than now

Of course he sometimes gave the ball away with his passing but the old maxim of the more times you touch the ball the more mistakes you can make was certainly not understood by some supporters

Always interesting to speculate how the team he's in affects the performance of a player. Outstanding players tend to look merely average in a low skill/low morale side, but on the other hand brilliant looking players in successful teams often fail to hack it when they move elsewhere.
Some of the players we've had over the last four years might have been much more successful in a winning side. I'm sure Rowley and particularly Maguire belong in this category, though I think Loz can still make it if he has a bit more luck with injuries.

What do merely average players look like in a low skill/ low morale side?

You've not been this season then?

Just being a clever dick. Some of the current squad would be fine in a confident, winning side. As we hope to see in the near future, but I ain't holding me breath.

A bit like saying they’d get carried by the other nine outfield players

On the basis that my post 156 was about a comparison of Rowley and Mandeville and led to much criticism of young Joe I thought it was interesting to read Clarevoyant's assessment of the Staveley game and the match report of yesterday's Ilkeston game.

Clarevoyant suggested that Rowley looked good in his best position and carried the ball forward but, of course, that was instantly denied by those that didn't witness it.

Then in last night's game the short report suggests Rowley was involved in both our goals and with the second one carried the ball forward for some 40 yards. Now I accept that this, again, was against lower class opposition but Mandeville played in the same game however didn't get a mention.

Now I know that such matters should be instantly dismissed as being wrong about Joe, however, I might suggest that they shouldn't be instantly dismissed about Mandeville and ask - was he anonymous? Because, that is were I started!!!!!

Excuse me while I do cartwheels over Rowley having a good game against Ilkeston.
ill stick to what I said both have been a disappointment this season & wont be here next (caveat: if out of contract).

You can only play the opposition in front of you and I don't think either are out of contract.

My argument remains - I would put Rowley on the bench rather than Mandeville.

That's where I started that's were I end.

Yes Rowley was involved in both goals last night but I lost count of the number of times he was knocked off the ball easily by Ilkeston players.
I forgot Mandeville was playing until he came off and walked past me.

Well, thanks for some sort of info by somebody who actually attended the game Benno.

Seems like you noticed Rowley but not Mandeville which somewhat supports my argument as to which one should be sat on the bench in a squad of 16.
