Bumped into a few people and cannot believe that players are still getting released for not being big enough i know of 3 players that have been given this reason...is it me but the only thing that matters is technical ability and decision making give me a little baller over a big galoot anyday of the week.

I'm afraid it's very much the English disease and isn't confined to CFC academy

definitely not just a cfc problem that one, certain big London clubs approach schools in their catchment area asking PE teachers for lads over 5'10 at 13+ my mate was released by town a long time ago now for this reason... he stands 6'2 now, plays in the non league.

Surely with the emergence of Spain, Germany etc who are all comfortable on the ball, English academies are starting to move on from this pre-historic rule that players have to be physical monsters?

another example was a Lithuanian kid in Worksop at year 8 who everyone was raving about, i watched him play and technically he was terrible, couldn't trap a dead rat.. but there was a great deal of interest in him, it was like a man playing against boys, trouble is when kids catch up physically they don't usually match up technically.

But are they actually better than the bigger players? Or same ability but the club picks bigger stronger players of comparable ability? Are they getting released based on positions? Is the club just selecting a good big 'un over a good little 'un?

I've a couple of examples I know at first hand similar to that. Genuinely very talented and good footballers for their age overlooked for kids the same age who were literally useless but who looked two years older.

In Cat 1 academies they have ways of finding out just how tall that player is going to be, certain measurement etc they know within a small approximation how big they'll get, no guesswork involved.

Yep a few have this (Chelsea just got rid of theirs though following complaints from parents)!

I'd be interested to know which club!

Certain clubs do obviously prioritise their requirements but size has never been a priority.
Physical attributes for specific positions occasionally (GK, CB) but a club would not say send me big lads!

I don't know mate...all I know is that the reason given was not big enough for academy football of course if there is a bigger lad of equal technical ability I suppose he would get the nod.

Madness.
How backward is the club?
Which muppets run the Academy?
Have they never heard of LTAD?

You'd be surprised.....just a couple of years ago Sheff Wed put a minimum height requirement on a trial advertisement.

Is it not kinder to tell a lad he isn't big enough as opposed to "you're ****"?
