There's a debate currently taking place on a national newspaper website about where the North begins. Someone suggested Crewe on the M6 and Chesterfield on the M1, to which someone else wrote this:

Chesterfield is in The Midlands and Sheffield is in the North. If you travel from Chesterfield to Sheffield on the dual carriageway there is a brow on the hill where the watershed divides either north or south. This is one defining point.

Is this true? I went to school in Chesterfield and live in Sheffield but I was born in New Whittington which is between the two. Most people there were Spireites but they also ran a coach to Blades games on Saturdays. Am I from the North or not?

I'd be interested to know which watershed they are talking about but culturally, I think Chesterfield is more northern than Midlands. I live in the Midlands nowadays having grown up in Town and can see more of a difference between here and Town than I can between Town and areas further to its north (and yes, that includes Deedahs). It's just a personal view and I may be mistaken as I haven't spent time living in Yorkshire (thankfully).
These go to eleven.

Chesterfield is northern.

Infact some years ago I couldn't have been prouder when a Peterborough fan wrote 'Northern B*st*rds!' on a Town bus stop.

It's a strange thing but to me Chesterfield was in the North when I was growing up but it seems to be moving towards Nottingham. The local accent and dialect has a definite Nah Nah twinge to it which was never there in the past. Maybe I only notice because I am a Deedah now!

Imagine it pronounced Kay-Lie. Does that ring any bells?

To be honest, no..... Not trying to be awkward- perhaps 'Kali' is very specific to a certain area? Calow, maybe?

wow, you've made me realise that I had absolutely no idea of its spelling, despite using it a lot as a kid (the word as opposed to be a 'user' as such.

Thanks!

Used to buy a couple of pence worth of Caylie in a paper cone from the corner shop.

Wet finger, dip it in, put in mouth then repeat.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks kids in Town don't use 'Thee, Thar and Thy' like we do?

Kaylie was great, lovely stuff

Term definitely used in 80s Holmewood and Hasland

I think Chesterfield is North Midlands, the word 'duck' would move us towards the midlands but we are only 10 miles from deedarland which is the north

Before moving to Chesterfield , I lived in Birmingham ( place of Birth ) Reading ( for uni ) and Leeds . Birmingham is midlands - although we eat kalie too  reading is Southern, Leeds Northern . Chesterfield has always felt more northern to me . People talk to you at the bus stop, you can have scraps AND gravy with your chips. It's also my favourite place of the lot. Feel at home here.

Read Bang in the Middle by Robert Shore - Chesterfield according to the book is North Midlands and makes a nice antidote to Stuart Maconie's view of the North.

Personally I would say Chesterfield is on the cusp but looking at historical importance and the role played by people from the North or the Midlands then us midlanders have more to offer than those moaning tykes....

Ive always thought Chesterfield to be Northern ..., always kind of thought it is the Southern tip of the North ...The likes of Alfreton etc Definitely being Midlands

BUT ...

If you go directly WEST from Tairn you will go through Macclesfield, Northwich and Ellesmere Port

And Chester would be "further South "

No too many people would claim Chester isn't a Northern place so on that premise Tairn cant be the " Southern tip of The North "
THEY FLY SO HIGH , NEARLY REACH THE SKY , AND LIKE MY DREAMS THEY FADE AND DIE

When ITV did the regional match highlights Central TV based in Birmingham considered Chesterfield as too North to be considered for coverage

Yorkshire TV however said they thought we were a little too South for regular coverage but they did visit several times in the day

If you look at the TV regions then Chesterfiield is about 3 miles insider the Yorkshire transmitter area.

However isn't Chesterfield in the East Midlands Development Agency area and the local Electricity Board was East Midlands?

Our accent is northern, Alfreton's is midlands & Derby's is just silly. The split lies south of Clay Cross!
