I'm convinced the figure is an error.

If there is a reluctance to investigate the no-shows then raise the subject with the chairman of the board and the company's auditor.

I don't feel that strongly about it as unlike many clubs we are provided with the no show figure.

For me the problem is the football authorities encouraging the over reporting of actual attendees.

For me, it's whether the gates fall within Ashley's budgetary estimates. He declared pre-season that he needs a 5k break even figure. Did he achieve that on Saturday, yes or no?, is what I would like to know.

If over 5000 paid for a ticket then yes regardless of whether or not they turned up.

Chesterfield's attendance for a team that WAS bottom of the bottom section has looked very good in a world of falling attendances.

Studying attendance in the bottom section shows:-

From 1947-58 the average attendance in the Third Division North ranged from 7,332 - 10,803.
From 1959-92 the average attendance in Division Four fell from 7,698 to 3,393.
From 1993 an average attendance for Division Three of 3,339 rose to 5,390 by 2004.
Between 2005 and 2017 attendance has never again averaged 5,000 as Division 2.

Over this period we've seen the demise as league teams of clubs which could attract crowds sufficient for league football like Tranmere, Wrexham, Stockport, Orient and York and their replacement with clubs like Crawley, Barnet, Fleetwood, Accrington, Forest Green and Morecambe which do struggle to attract spectators.

It leaves me wondering if the truth is we're slightly better than a struggling team might expect and we're being made to look good by the poor performance around us.

One of the downsides of trying to encourage fans of the future. Cheap season tickets in the empty family sections must account for a fair few every game

Particularly for midweek matches.

Do the stewards have a handheld ST reader for the disabled entrances? That could add up to a few if that information isn't making it into the stats.

The main thing is that 5150 home fans paid to watch the game, if that's the case. It would have been nice if they had all turned up as well.

There aren't many at Reading tonight. I suspect their 'attendance' will include thousands of absent ticket holders.

That is all that really matters. On the other hand if I was running the club I'd be interested in why 500/600 paid customers aren't turning

I don’t think it’s really that surprising. I miss about 3-5 games a season on average, as a season ticket holder, due to other commitments.

In fact on Saturday I didn’t even miss the game but I didn’t use my season ticket as I was in the posh seats and had a separate ticket, in that case I’d guess I’d count for 2 in the attendance figure.

If we assume the average is 4 missed games per season ticket holder and we have 3,000 of them then the average number of missing people per game would be 522.

Yes not least because if we get a sell out game then 500-600 seats that might be available can't be sold

For a game likely to see out you'd expect to see far fewer no shows.

Attendance looked about 5000 higher than actual attendees to me.

Maybe the new CEO will instigate a resale faciltity now we have this wizbang ticketing system for when we are top of the league(s) and selling out most weeks.

Pay the season ticket holder pro rata and re-sell at advertised price should cover the admin

Smells a bit fishy to me. Mentioned it before.

Simply because it's the same amount nearly every home game. I'd like to know how many over 80's freebies they gave away, can understand why plenty of people that age might not be able to get often.

Remember the halcyon days when the argument was were we under reporting attendences.

Where would these extra 1000 home fans sit was the shout

What is fishy about it?

It is just a PR exercise to over report attendances by reporting no shows

The post from Andy Spirite makes a good point, although it is a very stable figure whether it is a night game or a weekend game

I pointed out the context.

What was fishy is the consistent amount of no shows from game one to now, from 'paying' customers. As I suspected, this seems to be because we gave a load of free ST's away to 0ver 80's - as confirmed by Moondog above.

So nearly half of the no shows are people who didn't pay for ST's. Which makes sense to me. Don't panic. No need to call up Poirot or owt!

I might be wrong but I think unused comps/freebies can still be included in the 'attendance'.
