In his pre-match Notts County interview today I believe JR referred to 14 players of the group being with us going into next season.

By my counting there are 15 unless somebody has his figures wrong.

Vale Madness suggests 16.........

OOC 2022;
Whelan, Carline, Taylor, McCourt, Whittle, M Smith, Gunning, Rowley, Weston, Hollis, G Smith (gk)

OOC 2023;
Maguire, Oyeleke, D Rowe (+1 yr option), Mitchell (?)

OOC 2024;
Asante

so maybe a misquote by the boss or will there be a couple of contracts torn up?

Dunno.
Depending on which way his comments about Denton and Mandeville are interpreted, that's 2 more.

He's also got to deal with a goalkeeper who is OOC but got what looks like a bad injury whilst performing gallantly for us. Do we have a responsibilty to look after him?
IMO, on the face of it, it's poor budgetting to have 2 very good goalies at this level.

If you don't know what they are costing I'm not sure it's fair to comment on the budgeting.

I did feel, though, that Grant Smith's form dropped after he signed his contract extension and, to date, he has tended to be second choice at clubs he has been at.

Anyone know if Croll will have his contact extended? I think he’s been better than what we had, so i’d have him till the summer at least.

Signed extension to the end of the season just before the Chelsea game. Good news.

My opinion on the squad for next season;
Goalkeepers: Get rid of Loach and get a new first team keeper, indifferent on Minter or a new back up.
Defence: I would keep Grimes, Carline, Whittle, Williams (half decent back up but only as a RCB in a back three) and Maguire. Get rid of Gunning (age and injuries), Kerr (Poor), Hollis (Injury), King (Liability with conduct and don't think he has offered much for a short while), Miller (So disappointing since September), Croll (Injuries).
Midfield: I would keep Khan, Clarke, Oyeleke and Mccourt (decent squad player). I would get rid of Weston (good last few years but complete liability now), Kellerman (Poor since january), Rowley (do think theres a decent player in there but had enough chances and think he needs the move), Whelan (not been great since return) and Mandeville (far too inconsistent for me)
Attack: I would keep Kabongo (if we can manage to) and possibly Rowe (if back to full fitness) and get rid of Asante (terrible touch and lost his pace), denton (won't fit cooks style), Tyson (too old) and Quigley (shame but so poor).

That would leave us with a squad of:
Goalkeepers: Minter
Defence: Grimes, Carline, Whittle, Maguire, Williams
Midfield: Khan, Clarke, Oyeleke, Mccourt
Attack: Kabongo, Rowe

Plenty room for Cookie to build his own squad with new midfield and desperately wingers needed.
What is everyone elses thoughts?

the only one i'd certainly argue here is king, very frustrating at times but he makes things happen, he has a goal in him, has bags of self confidence and certainly can set up goals, defensively not much good but i'd keep him.

gunning v grimes has been a debate raging all season, it's a tough one, both 31 btw, for me gunning just has a bit more in terms of leadership and organisation, grimes best attribute his aerial ability but i think we are in need of a rcb and i'd probably just keep GG in front of him. then there's dents, tough one, if we are in for another season of NL football i'd give him another year.

I would still stick with Grimes over Gunning, although he is a leader and generally plays well when fit, Gav just isn't fit often enough. Agree there is definitely a case for keeping King just don't think he would fit into cooks 4-2-3-1 all that well. And then with dents if he was to be on peanuts then he is worth having but again he really won't suit cookies style.

Updated:

GK:
Loach - Release - Need a more commanding number 1
Minter - Release - Want a stronger back up (ideally not a massive wage still) that will challenge

Defence:
Grimes - Retain - Adequate squad player
Gunning - Release - Tough one as is good and brilliant leader however, hope we could bring an alternative in who is younger and less injury prone. Also feel GG may want to re join JR...
Williams - Release - Feel there is much better out there, I wouldn't be against him as a squad player though
Kerr - Release - Not good enough
Maguire - Retain - Would be fine as a squad player but not a starter
Carline - Retain - Plenty good enough if can make full recovery from injury
Hollis - Release- Not good enough
Croll - Release - Tough one, very good but has history of injuries from before and during time with us. Need less injury prone players
King - Retain - Can be a good player but needs to improve discipline and consistency
Whittle - Retain - Mr (7/10) all weeks

Midfield:
Weston - Release - Been poor for too long
Oyeleke - Retain - Quality player who dictates a game, although has injury problems I feel he justifies his retention
Mccourt - Release - Ok squad player but feel there's better out there
Kellerman - Release - Runs a lot but does little
Miller - Release - Please for the love of god someone take him, showed some promise but has annoyed me to no end with his lack of end product, lack of bottle and lack of brain
Khan - Retain - Really hope he gets more game time as he is one of few dynamic players we have
Clarke - Retain - Really hope he can recover from his injury, looks a real talent
Whelan - Retain - Think he will be a fine squad player
Rowley - Release - Needs a new club, never going to happen here sadly
Mandeville - Release - Far too inconsistent, we need better if we are to get out of this league

Attack:
Kabongo - Retain - If at all possible
Asante - Release - Feel he will want to go to JR and I personally don't rate him, poor touch and has lost his pace
Denton - Release - As long as Dents plays for us we have no chance of promotion
Tyson - Release - OAP
Rowe - Retain - Hope he can get back to his best after illness
Quigley - Release - Poor footballer, can only pray someone will have him

So that leaves...
GK:
Defence: Grimes, Maguire, Carline, Whittle, King
Midfield: Oyeleke, Whelan, Khan, Clarke
Attack: Kabongo, Rowe
