An almost unthinkable by election defeat, pre Corbyn that is, in Copeland were a sitting government won a mid term by election seat from the main opposition for the first time in decades. And then only a narrow win in Stoke where it should have been thousands of votes ahead. In fact I think it's fair to say if the UKIP candidate hadn't got into such a mess re his Hillsborough website comments it could well have taken the seat from Labour.
In a way I suppose the loss for Labour in the North could be akin to our impending relegation, maybe it needs the short term disaster to plan and restructure for a brighter future..fingers crossed.

The smear campaign was outrageous from Labour and it should be clear that after weaponising the dead at Hillsborough for votes in this election that there are no depths to which they will not go. Plus you had the local Iman telling the locals they would be going to hell if they didnt vote Labour.

Just watching C4 news! Straight question to Corbyn 'when you looked in the mirror this morning do you accept you are in any way to blame for the defeat'

Answer 'No'

Well as a lifelong Labour voter I could weep....the man is a phucking disaster and he can't even see it!!!!

I agree and he's been very clever. He knew that Labour was on a downward spiral after the last election and whoever took over was only going to slow the slide, but I doubt anyone grasped that Corbyn would not only win, but what a complete disaster he would be. Best reach the bottom before you step in to lead the climb. Long way back because the bottom isn't yet reached.

Unfortunately I think they need a David Milliband esque type who can appeal to the disgruntled middle classes of the south east to really get back in power.

Hasn't Burnham gone to be Manchester mayor? Think that will keep him out of leadership race until after 2020..

Well given his comments last night, David Milliband may well be considering a return! He didn't rule it out so my fingers are crossed...

David Miliband, like Sadiq Khan, like Andy Burnham, like so many other senior Labour figures is maintaining a public image whilst allowing Corbyn enough rope to hang himself. Unfortunately he and his supporters blame everything and everybody but themselves. Infact I cringed as I watched Ken Livingstone first call for unity then, in virtually the same breath, launch a sneering attack on 'Blairites' and 'the rubbish Blair served up'.

What, y'mean like rescuing the NHS? Rebuilding infrastructure? Delivering the minimum wage? Family tax credits? A booming economy?

And therein lies the problem.

Corbyn and his followers only see things in black and white, right and wrong, us and them. They'd rather raise their fists, sing the Red Flag and masturbate their socialist credentials than compromise to win power. Well great, terrific, what a wonderfully principled bunch they are. But unless you're in power those principles are just a pious wish list.

PS: a Labour smear campaign won them Stoke Central? So was Nuttall a local or not? Did he or his representatives post lies on his website or not? Did he hide himself away rather than campaign or not? Oh, and by the way, doesn't most of the British press conduct a daily smear campaign against Labour?
