I'm thinking about starting to collect these, classic stuff to start with, I listen to just about anything.

What should my first purchases be?
Blue Monday?
Maybe a bit of Prince?

Also where the hell do I buy a decent, non bulky record player? I have a nice B&O CD player and good speakers but I'm not really sure what's compatible.

at the risk of incurring the wrath of fishini, dont bother vinyl is in the past (short of having a top range sound system anyway).

everybody should have blue monday 12" in their collection, if only for the beauty of the sleeve.

Rubbish. The sound quality of vinyl far exceeds that of CD/Digital by a flying mile. The sound system quality is irrelevant but you do need an above average turntable and pick up though and a pair of good speakers.(just like any system) The rest like amps and CD players :angry will be with your system anyway. B&O ? All looks and little else get yourself a decent system, a turntable and see where vinyl takes you. If you do go down this road I will challenge you to tell me the compressed rubbish ob CD's sound better

I like the looks of my B&O though, I'm superficial, anyway the speakers look and sound outstanding, they both need there own power source and him built in amp, google B&O 6000, 15 years old and still look stunning.

Like I said, I don't want anything ugly, I want a record player that looks like a piece of furniture.

So I've seen a new Pioneer turntable with built in pre amp which will plug straight into the AUX of my Beosound 3000

£139, the vintage B&O is £500 plus, that's a lot of vinyl.

Pioneer made a cracking turntable back in the day. It was the PL12D and its replacement the PL112D look for one on E Bay or where ever. Better than the modern ones available today unless you spend a fortune on such as a Linn Sondek LP12 best deck ever made. New ones of these are now priced from £1990 for the transcription level up to £15+k for the Klimax model. Bought mine in 1975 cost me £500. They are almost unchanged since 1972. They are perfection and couldn't be bettered. British engineering at it's best musically speaking. Have a look for a used one of these. Well worth the money.

Edit- Forget a Linn looking at the prices they are fetching. I'd like to know what my original in pristine condition is worth with Linn Glass platter. (never sell though) Some good PL12d's and another very good deck was the Thorens rega some good ones on E Bay for the price of the new poneer but I gaurantee you they will be better quality sound

HMV in Meadowhall used to a massive selection of White Label stuff 10 years ago, not sure its as popular now though (given most "DJ's" tend to use laptops instead of the old 1's & 2's), so guess they'll have stopped doing it.

eBay and The Proact Car Boots are the way forward!

A new second hand Vinyl shop has opened in Town just below the Welbeck, they also have some turntables in, I have loads of vinyl especially 12 inch vinyl from the likes of New Order,Frankie goes to Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys mainly electronic stuff. The original Blue Monday is a stunning record altho I prefer True Faith with the superb 1963 on the B-Side, you can get a number of different 12 inch records of Two Tribes that are worth tracking down.
Vinyl has a charm all of it's own but for some to say Vinyl exceeds cd's by a flying mile is just plain wrong.

I love the track, have done since I bought the 12 inch of True Faith back in 87, Touched By The Hand of God is also a favorite of mine. The most played New Order record tho is the Technique album, simply perfect in my opinion.

A superb track mate, one of the early ones that has a Joy Division feel to it. I recently picked up a New Order four cd compilation called RETRO, highly recommended to any New Order/Joy Division fan.
