It was of course the first FA Cup tie decided by a penalty shoot-out but it wasn't the final. This method of determining the winners wasn't generally used until 1991 but was used in 1972 to decide the outcome of a game from the previous season!

Why? It obviously didn't affect the competition, so why bother? And how had the previous year's competition been able to conclude with an outstanding fixture? Sounds as logical as our repeat at MK. Good old football administrators

Had the same protocol have been in force for the 1996-7 competition we would have played in the equivalent game!
