Everyone has different reasons for the voting the way they do. Many do vote based on their local MP and I agree with you about Dennis, I have a lot a respect for him, he is a great guy. Also like you, up until 2015 I had always voted Labour but I do so more on the national outlook and the party in general. I can honestly say I won't be voting for them any time soon
