If Leeds get promoted. We get a bonus payment sell on clause of approx 150K for Liam Cooper. Leeds Leeds Leeds ..... Marching on together.
Pity we didn't maximise of Kev Davies playing at Bolton Southampton and England. We missed a trick there.

I think, if memory serves me right, Soton offered £750k with a 10% sell on and other snippets but Norton Lea wanted £950k all in!
A year later he went to Blackburn for £7.5million!,,,

The difference being that Davies was out of contract and had already signed for Southampton when the fee was negotiated. Cooper was still under contract and therefore we had a better bargaining position. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

No real surprise there imo Norton would always see the instant maximum pounds signs to get the money into our bank account as soon as possible

Who knows he might have thought that no one else would ever pay a big fee for Davies in the future so would never think a sell on clause would be needed

And they'll be getting charged £8 million to join the premier league as part of the repayment plan to broadcasters. A bit wrong that the new clubs going up to the premier league are getting penalised for something that happened whilst they were not part of it.

Oh and that 150k will cover about 6 weeks of losses and then it'll be gone so it's not really going to make any difference.

The £150k will no doubt disappear into the black hole otherwise known as the books of Chesterfield fc

I knew it was a 6 figure amount but didn't know it would be as high as £150k.

But, what percentage of that has to go to Hull City?

Isnt any additional money we make from the transfer all part of the deal though so if Hull had a sell on clause they get a cut of the initial fee and anything else like this? Sure we've been here before with deals like this.

I think weve concluded in the past that every deal is different, but I recall somone saying (possibly Dalekpete) that we owed a % of the money we got from Clucas moves (from Hull to Swansea to Stoke) to Mansfield due to the sell-on agreed when he signed for us, making him technically our biggest fee paid for a player.

This is the first time i've heard of any sell-on received for kev Davies, though.

Fairly certain we didnt get any sell one for Davies or i've never seen it reported as such. As mentioned we didnt have a lot of bargaining chips with Davies with him being out of contract and only one club interested in buying him.

And if we'd turned it down we'd have been in the wonderful world of a tribunal setting the fee and i'm not sure we would have got much bearing in mind the fact he was with the blunts initially before signing for us.

I could be wrong here, but didn't Spurs make an offer for Davies mid season, but we turned it down, or did I just dream this?

I'm probably being completely naive here, but one thing I've never understood about players who are going to be out of contract at the end of the season but still have games to play is the following. Why didn't someone in power at Town say to Davies "we have an FA Cup semi at Old Trafford next week, do you want to play in it?" The probable answer being "yes of coarse I do". Well we have a Premiership club sniffing around after you, and they are going to screw us over price. Sign a one year extension to your contract, we promise not to hold you to it, but we can then get a better price for you, sign on the dotted line would you Kev thats a good chap.

This is basically what happened with Folan isnt it, he signed a deal to make sure we came out of it with a good deal and we promised to not stand in his way with i suspect some caveat based on a certain fee being agreed etc. I've know idea where we stood with Davies or more likely his agent plus there is the chance that there would have been no one willing to pay what we wanted if we had the power to get more money for him. Half the issue was that there was only Southampton interested in buying him at the time and would they have been had he been under contract and having to pay more at which point Davies would have been stuck with us in League One.

Let's not forget Davies was still under twenty three, though. Meaning we could still demand a fee. He was also one of the brightest lower league talents, had been selected for England at his age group and was being watched by several clubs.

Or at least that's what his brother told me at the time.

Okay, going to tribunal would've been a gamble. But missing out on a huge pay-day was one of Lea's many mistakes and just sooooo CFC...

For a brief while I used to get the odd free ticket to watch Southampton (via Kev's family/friends) and was informed that there were several clubs in the frame for him.

Tribunals are/we’re notorious for setting low fees but it would have had a sell on clause I suspect. The fact we signed him after his time with the blunts would have meant not much compensation for developing him in his early years. Norton will have bottled the thought of the tribunal giving us peanuts wanting more guaranteed up front.
