I know deciphering Gary Caldwell's tactics have strained the greatest football minds (and Walton Spireite) but did I notice England set up in a similar fashion against Germany as the Spireites have done in recent times.

Southgate and Caldwell are young managers and is this new fluid formation based on 3 at the back the new football de jour? Will it work or is it a passing fad?

England worked hard and could've, perhaps should've had a goal or two.

However they were up against half a German side in testimonial mode.

I guess it shows how far England have fallen that former rivals now see them/us as bit part performers in a player's send-off.

England played 3 centre backs which is what you need to have. We have a left back, a centre back and a centre mid in there sometimes. Also, with Bertrand and Walker you have 2 good full backs who you know will defend and work up and down the flanks, unlike when we play Mitchell or Fapuala there for instance.

If we can get to a point where we have Mcginn and Jones as wing backs they will be mobile enough and good enough defenders to do the role. Not sure what the contract situation is for these two for next season.

The key is to bring on the right players for the preferred system/s
Fail to do that, we will be rock bottom.

Recruitment of the correct personal is paramount

And, of course, England lost.

maybe something like this

lee
hird evatt ?
mcginn jones
dimao nolan

?

dennis ?

so another centre half needed maybe two. attacking midfielder to play behind the front two and a big mobile striker would be nice to play with dennis . not sure about dimao and nolan but put them in for now!

It works if you have the right players. But then Caldwell did say formations and tactics don't matter, so probably not.

Caldwell also thinks we are doing a lot of things right and have played well at times whilst he has been here.

There has been fleeting glimpses, against peterboro especially, he has won the league, he's no mug, let's see what he can do with his own players and his own backroom team, instead of just having a pop all the time... relegation has neen on the cards all season regardless of what carson kept spouting.
all we are saying, is give us ...a goal, or 2+

Three wins in his last 26 games as.a manager says we just might be the mugs.

We'll have to wait and see then, it's not great atm i agree, but its a very poor squad, he needs to hit the ground running next season but if he doesn't can we afford to get rid?? I very much doubt it.

We won't be able to afford the kind of players to play his kind of football and we won't be able to afford to let him go, so I have very little hope.

It won't work for town with our current players but 3 at the back for England is definitely the way forward.

As much as I personally don't like a few of the players it has to be said that Kyle walker and Danny rose have been excellent as wing backs for a couple of seasons and that's key to the system.

Had Kane been upfront the other night I suspect England would've scored more than once.

I know Germany were also missing players but I don't think England are that far behind them, obviously I wouldn't want to see smalling anywhere near the starting 11 though!!

I don't want to detract from the performance of England players after a good effort, but it has to be recognised that every German fan and player in that stadium was more interested in saying goodbye to Podolski than in the match. I don't think you can draw conclusions until England play against a team that is going all - out to win the game.
