There was a thread about Clarke Carlisle's recent suicide attempt on TFF (well I don't think it's been confirmed as a suicide attempt yet but it's a pretty safe guess). Not only were there a plethora of ignorant comments about the bloke, one cretin said "Ah, depression - the coward's excuse for doing/not doing something" - or words to that effect. In this day and age, comments like that are beyond me.

Sounds like a complete prick mate.

I had serious alcohol issues from university to my early 40's. In April this year I will have been alcohol free for 5 years. Odds may be against Gazza but there is always a chance he can turn it around.

Well done mate. I'm seven days dry!

The religion, but both have helped. I was an agnostic before.

Its dodgy ground having a drink problem and being agnostic, your never going to believe somebody who says your alcoholic.

Something I've struggled with since mid teens.. I'm 25 now and still have times of absolute rock bottom! Prescribed every antidepressant under the sun.. My main gripe is doctors seem all too happy to dish out tablets left, right and centre.. But don't spend enough time getting to the route of the problem!

Agnostics dont believe humans can convince them of god but are willing to believe that a god may exist, they may not be able to be convinced they are alcoholic

It a line of thought that having a belief makes it easier to overcome addiction, whether thats backed up by science i dont know but its like trading one thing for another, im not religious but its got to better than killing yourself drinking.

So it's easier to overcome addiction if you believe in a higher force?

I didnt say that i said it was a line of thought , religion is not for me id say i was an agnostic atheist but i can be open enough to think that somebody who relies on alchohol may need another form of dependency in a god, now if their god be it real or not gets them off the sauce and back on track who are we to judge.

Correct me if I have this wrong but didn't his dad have similar issues and didn't he run a pub. To me the North East is a big drinking culture and going to Glasgow does not help his cause at the time.
God I hate this league.

Being mugged in East Ham when I'd had one too many was a big turning point for me too. Long story.

This is a huge subject but I don't want to post any more right here because this is a football forum not an AA or Christian apologetics forum. So if anyone wants to discuss this more they can PM me if they like.

I'm not upset by what you said Bonnyman I may have thought similar before.

Nuff said I don't want to hijack this thread further

I believe many people find it easier to say they are atheists rather than admit that they are religious. Not picking out anybody particular l may say. I am not religious but I believe there is something else after this life. If this makes me a weirdo so be it.

You might as well say their are plenty of people who believe in god but never really think about why they do..mainly because their parents etc did.One big question that i always think is if jesus was the son of god why did he supposedly come at such time in world history , its so illogical that it defies believing in him.

If you have faith you don't have to have proof or reasons for your beliefs. I suppose people who have no faith and no beliefs find it hard to comprehend and understand those that do and vice versa. Sad that either side of this debate problems understanding the other. I have however found that those that are on the religious side of the fence are without doubt the more tolerant

I believe we are animals, advanced ones at that but animals non the less. We have evolved. Life has evolved hand in hand with the planet. We exist to reproduce, as do all life forms from bacteria, plants animals and people. Thats all it is.

Life can be shown to have evolved, from around 3.7 billion years ago, and as life evolved the planet has changed, and as the planet changed life evolved further to suit. Its all there, before your eyes if you look for it. All explained by geology and biology. No need any more for a creator any more.

I am therefore a committed Atheist, based on reason and evidence, rather than for an "easy reason".....................

I was interested in the semi reasons, and how this helped him overcome his problems.

A new hope.
