Helping themselves to charity money that was supposed to be helping children...

'Ashley Carson, a businessman and director of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, and one of the city’s MPs, Clive Betts, were recruited to give the charity respectability – but when they asked for bank statements and financial reports, they were fobbed off.

Once the pair resigned as trustees and directors in 2013, “the amount of money being transferred to the Sodje family increased dramatically”, prosecutor Julian Christopher QC said.'

If I was a director of anything and was "fobbed off" when I asked for financial records of any kind I would stop being a director very quickly....does that not immediately raise concerns???

Ashley was a director for the best part of four years.

Does this read to anyone else like the writer is making accusations against Messrs Carson and Betts? He appears to have a hilariously firm grip on the wrong end of the stick, as neither of these respectable Sheffield personalities came under any suspicion.
It's nice to be able to Trust again.

'The brothers were found guilty of defrauding the foundation through Ashley Carson, a businessman and director of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, and one of the city’s MPs, Clive Betts.
Once the pair was recruited to give the charity respectability in 2003, they started to siphon money to the Sodje family.'

I suppose it depends on one's interpretation of the word 'siphon'.

If you have no other interest, then yes.

I've been stupid to enough to hang on in there due to a personal, non-financial, interest. I hope I never have to do it again!

Things must have been grim for Ashley Carson to give it respectability.

bump

Just reading that again, it's ambiguous on whether the 'they' refers to Carson and Betts or to the brothers. Perhaps Ashley could clear it up.

I am pretty certain they meant the brothers but if you were the sort to throw around libel writs then that might be something that you would want clearing up very clearly and explicitly or a writ may be ensuing...

Dim View - Every quarter HMRC produce a list of deliberate tax defaulters. A company at the centre of this investigation were mentioned by them recently -

"Fowler Oldfield Ltd neglected to pay £5,959,138 in tax for the period October 2014 to December 2015, and was given a penalty of £3,488,081."

The police investigation lead by Ramona Senior and her team continues.

….and now, the Mail reveals that the debt to the Assay Office has been repaid.

For those interested, Bernie Ecclestone is now suing Stunt for even more money. I can't see him being a tenant of the Assay office for much longer. I'd advise Ashley against lending him a bob or two to tide him over if he asks. It would be very risky.

Just a heads up that next Tuesday at 9.15pm BBC1 are broadcasting "Britain’s Secret Charity Cheats" which covers the Sodje brothers case. I understand Ashley Carson who gave witness evidence for the prosecution at the Old Bailey features in the programme

Did he do the interview from his Aston and under what guise will he feature, Assay Master, Chairman of Chesterfield Football Club or Company Secretary?

Where is Cartman for a game of Ashley Bingo?

As a former trustee of the Charity is of course the serious answer
