From what i can gather Sunderland gave him permission to meet the FA in confidential talks about the possibility of him taking over....which was then leaked to the press. They arent happy and since issued a statement basically saying get on with it and appoint him if you want him or say they dont want him. Either way they as a club need a quick resolution seeing as its a key part of the season for signings, getting the preparation right etc. My Sunderland supporting other half is not very happy that again, but for once not the clubs fault, they are potentially going to be looking for yet another manager when for the first time in a while they seemed to have the right bloke.

Sunderland are right though....the FA cant mess them about. If they are going to pick Allardyce they need to get on with it and do it.

Can you imagine Allardyce! I suppose he can't do worse in a finals.

Personally. ...i think sam will make a decent job of it, not be bullied into picking the fa's goldenboys and pick on current form ...not be worried about picking players from the lesser prem clubs..instead of just the chosen few...and play players in the positions they do for their club.

They would likely be his plus points, yes.

A few on the other side too.

The simple truth is that because of the FA's failure to develop sufficient numbers of quality coaches, allied to the Premier League's preference for foreigners, there're painfully few English managers to choose from.

But of those Allardyce is, sadly, the best qualified for the job.

It's not all doom and gloom, though.

For all his reputation for ugly football Allardyce has proven capable of getting the best out of what he has - which in the case of English players ain't that much! What's more he can motivate and organise a team, the qualities that got some relatively ordinary sides further than England in the Euro's.

Infact many wrote off Portugal pre-tournament.

The FA must think longer term, though. Why not insist younger managers attend England 'camps' to learn for the future? Why not have the likes of Eddie Howe and, yes, our own (as was) Sean Dyche involved so they'll be better prepared later on? If there is to be a progression including Gareth Southgate why not have him in the dugout at first team games?

And most important of all it's time to impose a quota of English players on Premier League clubs, I'd say at least - at least - five in any match day squad. It's the only way young English players - who seem to do well at youth level tournaments (we beat the French at U19 level only last evening) - will get the experience they need.

What's happened in the past has failed. Embarrassingly so. There simply has to be a new approach.

Yes there needs to be an overhaul. Not Big Sam for me. I reckon Bilic might sort it.

I wonder if Big Sam will give Rico a place in his back room staff?

Sam simply plays to his strengths . He now has "arguably " the best set of players ever available to him as a manager

He had earned " relative " success by playing safe ...his mantra has been " respect the point ".

However he is pig headed ( not the worst thing in a manager maybe ) and will do things his way.

The season before last WHU were in relative terms riding high at Xmas 3rd in league without the injured Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan

Both recovered at same time and were shoe horned back to break up a winning side and what followed was 4 months of relegation form on a Villa scalle

It's this kind of pig headed ness that irks many ... He always called West Ham fans deluded well FS you have now got THE most deluded fans in the world to satisfy

Good Luck not my choice but then I haven't really bothered about England since Sir Bobby Robson

Paul Clement will be coach for England following Big Sam.

Best man for the job at the present time.
Also one of the most forward thinking managers out there.
A superb man manager, motivator and scholar of sports science.

Like a bigger version of Dave Brailsford or Clive Woodward.

He'll do well

I'll say it again: whoever is in charge now, up and coming managers like Howe and Dyche should be embraced into the England set-up to at least give them an introduction should their time come.

What the hell have we got to lose?!
