Glad we have got this started. Sounds a reasonable appointment so not going to knock the club on that one. Progress from last season already.

Seen a few tools moaning it wasn't Shinner on Facebook, as good as he was we need to let that drop

Damn obviously wasn't shortlisted lol!

Hope the new guy starts soon as the pics from yesterday weren't promising in terms of some of the players ability to carry out an exercise!
Oh and pics of them on spinning bikes - going to be a long season (look out for a couple of early hamstring tears....)

New fitness and conditioning coach Gareth Piper says that the decision to join the Spireites was an easy one to make.

Piper joined the club on Sunday and was straight to work yesterday as the first team squad reported back for pre-season training, with the new man more than impressed with the players’ efforts.

Speaking exclusively to iFollow, Piper said: “They’ve been brilliant.

“The lads have been back quite early but the attitude has been fantastic, we did a double session with a bit of gym work in the morning and then out on the grass in the afternoon where we did ball work and a bit of running.

“I left Wigan a week or two ago and Gary gave me a call and he asked me what my plans were. I told him that I had nothing planned and that’s when he asked me if I’d be interested to come down for pre-season, and I said that I’d love too!”

The double session saw the players conduct numerous activities as they began their bid to come back stronger and bounce back into Sky Bet League One at the first attempt.

“The group was split so one half did 35 minutes on the bike at a very low intensity aerobic workout,” he explained.

“Whilst the other group were doing a very low level strength work for us to get a gauge of what their movement is like in the gym, because the manager wants to build a culture where the players will work on the grass supplemented with work in the gym.”

After Monday’s ‘induction’ the groups will once again be split today and on Wednesday with one group undertaking physical tests while the other works on the training ground with the coaching staff.

It means that the players will be in for a busy but very beneficial week.

Piper added: “They’ve got a couple of testing days today and Wednesday and they aren’t your traditional testing days where most clubs might do a bleep/yo-yo test.

“We’ve got some testing taking place at Leeds University on body fats and bone testing. Then towards the end of the week the manager will start to introduce a bit more ball work.

“The manager has given everyone the chance to build a really good base and increase the intensity and lower the volume as such.

“We’ve got some games planned against good opposition and I’m hoping that the seven weeks together will give us a brilliant chance to hit the ground running.”

We are truly leaders of the modern era. I bet no other club has thought of this yet. Get in Gary.

Cue another round of 'we have never looked fitter' in August, turning to 'we don't look fit, we need a better fitness coach' in January.

Where would swimming rate? Would swimming be more beneficial and less punishing on the body than cycling and running every day? Or would a mix of different exercise be best?

First couple of days of pre season and people already quick to slag off comments or pick apart articles. How about we leave them to get on with it and start judging when the actual football starts taking place. Sounds to me like it's going to be a little more in depth than usual with the university tests etc. Can't afford to have anyone in the squad who is unfit. Fingers crossed for an injury free next few weeks and a few more players coming in especially in midfield and I'll be slightly optimistic for the new season.

Only if use for rehab and maybe a recovery day. Not for pre season.

Gareth piper worked with Gary at Wigan and thinks highly and glad we have this position filled because the fitness of the squad needed addressing and piper was with Wigan from 2011 and worked under caldwell when he was manager at the latics. Released from Wigan recently.
All town aren't we?

Presumably Gareth oversaw the fitness of two or three relegation sides at Wigan then?

I venture it will be more about the players we sign rather than a fitness coach.

If a side has been relegated it's not all down to fitness is it?

I think you miss my point sir.

Neither will the best fitness coach get a bunch of ne'er do wells promotion. I don't get why this board is so hooked up on our fitness coach, it's about the skills on the pitch, far more than their fitness.

Personally I couldn't care less who the fitness coach is but I'm quite keen Caldwell picking players in their best position & showing some tactical awareness.
