Doubt they’ll be the last in the current climate

Think in their case the current situation tipped them over the edge but as you say the longer it goes without crowds the worse it will go.

Shows the disparity of the current state of football in the UK though....Sky Sports News hardly mentioned it as they get all fake excited about Bale going back to Spurs and Aubameyang signing a new deal probably on a weekly wage not far off what Macclesfield owed to end up being liquidated.

Very sad to see
Just wait for the ‘greedy Prem footballers could have chipped in to save them with 2 weeks pay’ nonsense to begin on Talk Sport etc though

The irony of this being a sub breaking news story to the Bale transfer 'saga's is surely not lost on even you. Especially when his weekly wage is likely more than enough to cover the 500k Macc have been wound up for.

It is all wrong, whether you like what you hear on Talksport or not.

Maybe not the clubs as such but the Premier League is run by the FA who in turn govern all football in England. They could certainly look to do something to help clubs as whilst there are the odd few that have been badly run to get into issues currently there are going to be many clubs at all levels that will struggle with no ticket income.

Why is it nonsense? One player could've saved them. I'm not saying any particular player SHOULD have done it, but it illustrates the current sickness that it is the finances of modern football.

Totally agree with all the comments made so far. The disparity between the Premiership and lower league/grassroots footy is staggering. Sad, very sad indeed.

Flip side of this, Southend also been in court but have avoided being wound up and given more time to clear debts of just short of £500k.

So long as Sol Campbell gets his money...

I agree that Covid is of course exceptional circumstances but under normal conditions any kind of financial safety net for smaller clubs would just be abused by owners keen to gamble on short-term gains.

Mac was my first Town away trip. Freezing. Forgot my glasses. Couldn't see a dull 0-0. Watched the replay. They beat us at Saltergate.
These go to eleven.

This sad story is far from straight forward; Covid may get a chunk of blame, but it's really got very little to do with it. A long-term far from ideal owner has overseen a litany of problems that have never been satisfactorily explained or addressed. Worth a read.

Bale on 600k a week is obscene.

Shame as Macclesfield just down the road from me, but completely unsurprising. Wouldn't also surprise me if the Moss Rose is bulldozed shortly for housing given its location on the main Leek Road. Ironic their former manager John Askey put a claim in for £173k according to his solicitor.

The only link between Bale and Macclesfield is the game of football-sounds obvious but similarly:-

A guy gets evicted from his house because he can’t pay his bills. A guy down the road has a massive house- he didn’t do anything to help the little guy pay his lortagage.

- a pub a day goes out of business - meanwhile Wetherspoons opens a new one every month

-a corner shop goes under- meanwhile Selfridges makes massive profits

And that sort of thing 🤷🏽‍♂️

So we're down to 23 clubs and 44 fixtures now?

Guess it depends if you believe there is no symbiotic relationship between grass roots football and all steps beyond up to the ‘elite’ stuff

I think like a lot of things, COVID has accelerated a process that was already happening (remote working, end of the 9 to 5, more online transactions, cashless transactions, changing nature of the high street) and some smaller football clubs, many who were walking a financial tightrope see their main income stream vanish - it’ll tip them over the edge.

Macc’s losses seem minuscule compared to what we were shipping at the height of the DA/AC reign

As the Trust seems to indicate unless there’s a major change in fortune , we’ve got weeks before the proverbial......
