I remember when I were a kid we used to have a den under the bridge early seventies Carnt remember too much about it but don't remember any tracks also about 100 yards away on the Whittington side of the lane there was a shaft not to sure how deep or what it's purpose was but it was worked daily was also guarded by dogs 24/7 upto the lane was one massive stockyard for the works

A bit more digging and apparently the old great central railway ran under the bridge obviously before the tip as you can still see the old line at the other side of the tip it basically followed the canal from hollingwood viaduct bilby bridge new bridge lane bridge then towards sainsburys all these bridges can be seen if you walk from hollingwood to sainsburys at Whitt moor

Great view of Sheepbridge and Whittington from the air 1930s.

I cannot remember any buildings on the GC line around that bridge

the signal box at the end of the up line platform at the old New Whittington station was the only building left there

the platforms themselves were removed when the inter city express trains started using the line when the traffic was diverted from the

main line onto the freight line

I also walk a lot down there now and sometimes never see any traffic on the freight line

A far cry from the days when you could hear the bells in the signal box clanging every few minutes with trains on the line and also

going into barrow hill sheds just passed the end of the platform

Trains also joined the freight line there from one of the colleries in the area. That line ran passed the bottom of Staveley Chemicals under Hall Lane and in fact up to a few months ago the lines were still present

A great shot of New Whittington and Central Railway. Bilby Bridge re 1930s. The poster who on here who put the original links on here deserves a medal!

Agreed some great shots of the area from above. The road layouts in particular havent changed a deal to today

Interesting to follow the road from New Whittington to Barrow Hill to where the Staveley sports ground was built some 15 years later

Can I recommend this rail map site?

This shows the Chesterfield loop for the GCR but was also where I found out about the tramway through New Whittington.
