Some of you may have seen or heard items in the media today about a study Derbyshire Fire and Rescue are doing into smoke alarms and their suitability to wake kids up.
There is research to suggest the standard smoke alarm type noise doesn't wake kids (boys more than girls) and experiments are being done with voice message smoke alarms to try and overcome this.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue is looking for parents of children aged 2 - 16 to join in a study on the subject. If you are interested please go to the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue website and click on the smoke alarm study link towards the bottom of the home page.

I've got boys and it takes an earthquake to wake them. I've seen a lot about the Philpots and how some of their children died without waking. Anything that gives kids a better chance of surviving a house fire is worth researching.

Done and dusted so to say. Had the Fire Service to advice us on our fire alarm system. Good they are too.

We do our best and I'm glad we helped out, always good to hear of happy punters.
The community safety / prevention side of things is something we have really upped over the last few years, must be working considering how much our calls have dropped.

There are other options out there, hard of hearing alarms have a vibrating pad under the pillow, but they come at a cost. Dave has been passionate about this issue for a number of years and is working hard to create a solution, everyone who signs up will contribute.

Let me just stress though, conventional smoke alarms do save lives.

I've got 2 fire service fitted alarms at the moment, test them every month

What about repeated tones of "Allen out, Allen out ....." that would be enough to wake the most hibernatory chesterfield resident.
