The issue of budgets certainly is an interesting one. If £1,400 is indeed the average wage I think there must be 30% of our squad taking up 70% of our budget. There is little to no chance that Morsy, Ryan, Roberts and Evatt would have dropped to the fourth tier on that wage. Same story as last season with the signings of Hird and the mystery sum of Richards wage. I would also expect Tommy and Drew to have racked up some loyalty bonus payments for being the two longest serving players.
We could indeed be looking to counter-balance that with the signings of Banks, Gardner, Brown and the young lad also from FC United for next season, Gnanduillet will also be in this bracket along with Devitt (:s) reserve goalkeepers and. A step up from non league I would expect any rise from what they have been earning would make them no more than a grand a week tops.
However, you just need to look at that top list, and add O'Shea, who should be playing, the experience of Humphries, Cooper, and Doyle who, love him or hate him is our top scorer. That should be more than enough to have seen us to the title regardless of other teams budgets, whether we are first or twenty-first in spending. Whether Oxford, Fleetwood, Bury and Scunthorpe have spent more than us, have you seen enough from them in our 9 matches against these sides so far that it has been money well spent. I mean even Scunthorpe have fallen into the same trap of signing Gary McSheffrey!
So I think that whilst an interesting talking point, it doesn't matter the budgets, its the personnel that you have for that budget. Because of that, I don't think any of us were unreasonable in suggesting that we should comfortably have achieved automatic promotion this year. The budget question will be more in the forefront next season should we cross the line... Will we have learned anything from our mistakes after the JS promotion season?
