I read with interest the current debate on the standard of referees this season and thought it would be interesting to see what everyone thinks was the worst referee at a town match. I think David Ellery would top most people's list for his missed goal in the FA cup semi-final. I would also offer, for older fans, the name of A.W.S.Jones of Ormskirk who back in the sixties on Boxing Day missed 3 penalties and gave our opponents Barnsley a blatant offside goal. That put paid to Chesterfield's unbeaten home run and ultimately lost us promotion that year. I have NEVER forgotten!!

The idiot we had the other week who sent off Kovacs a few years ago.

Was there one clown v Peterborough 20+ years ago who was slaughtered at the time? Parker?

Was it Jim Parker who went mad at Darlington many years ago, sending 3 off and booking practically everyone else?

Remember that well

After the game my mate who had earlier bought a Barnsley lapel badge and I waited an eternity for the clown to immerge from the back of the stand to offer him the said badge he declined very politely!!!!

E J Parker gets my vote. I wouldn't lower myself to award elleray owt

I rarely get riled by refs these days, and anyone else who went to the fa cup game at Darlington 90-91 ish, and witnessed the performance of the Preston garage owner EJ Parker, will fully understand why!

(Dons tin hat before saying this one) But we must give Ellery a bit of leeway for the Penalty(?) against Forest earlier in the cup run! The worst I've ever seen must be Lee Mason v Burton in the First season at the Proact for sending Derek Niven off when Niv was the one fouled and then proceeding to prance about like a ballerina with a 'look at me' demeanour there after.

I think the match you refer to against Barnsley wasnt on Boxing Day it was early January and I can still picture Ivan Holletts 25 yard volley hitting the roof of the

Kop net only for the said referee to disallow it because Andy Wilson was stood offside on the wing. That would have made the score 3-3

At least today I think the goal would have been allowed with the changes in the offside laws

How about the one refereed the home match with Hull, maybe 12 years back - Mathieson was it?
